James Shoal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

James Shoal (Cengmu Shoal, Zengmu Ansha, 曾母暗沙, 詹姆沙, Beting Serupai) is a small bank in South China Sea, with a depth of 20 meters [1]. It is located about 80 km northwest of Bintulu, on the Continental shelf of Borneo. Geographically, it is south of the Spratly Islands, but it is sometimes listed with them for convenience, because it is a subject of international dispute like the nearby Spratly Islands. The People's Republic of China (PRC), the Republic of China (ROC, Taiwan) and Malaysia claim this area, and it falls within the EEZ of Malaysia. It's the southernmost feature of China as claimed by the PRC and ROC. On May, 1983, the Chinese Navy visited James Shoal, demonstrating its sovereignty of the area.
