James L. Dennis

James L. Dennis (born 1936, Monroe, Louisiana) is a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. His chambers are in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Judge Dennis graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1959, earned a law degree from Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center in 1962, and his master of law (LL.M.) from University of Virginia Law School in 1984. He was in private practice with the firm Hudson, Potts & Bernstein in Monroe, Louisiana from 1962 until 1972. He served as a member of Louisiana House of Representatives from 1968-1972.
He sat as judge on the Fourth District Court of Louisiana from 1972-1974, on the Court of Appeals of Louisiana Second Circuit from 1974-1975, and as associate justice, Supreme Court of Louisiana from 1975-1995. In 1995, he was appointed to the Fifth Circuit by Bill Clinton.
