James Hawkes (congressman)

James Hawkes was a United States Representative from New York. He was born in Petersham, Massachusetts on December 13, 1776. He moved with his parents to Richfield, New York in 1789. He attended the common schools, taught school in Richfield and later in Burlington. Hawkes returned to Richfield and served as sheriff of Otsego County. He served as a member of the New York State Assembly, and was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Seventeenth Congress (March 4, 1821-March 3, 1823). He died in Rochester on October 2, 1865 with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery.
