James H Boyd Intermediate School is a three year primary school serving grades 3-5. It is part of the Elwood School District in Huntington, New York. Students have a daily mathematics period focusing on computation and problem-solving, a reading program emphasizing literature and basal skills, and a writing program based on grade-level objectives. Guidance and socialization skills are also taught through the language arts program.
A hands-on science program is based on the use of manipulative materials and activities enhanced by a science lab. The lab also has a lending zoo and is moving ahead in the field of laser disk technology. All classrooms have their own computers and the school has a comprehensive computer lab as well.
The social studies program incorporates an interdisciplinary approach wherever possible and emphasizes research and reporting skills. Students also attend classes taught by specialists in art, vocal music, physical education, library, and computers.
Fourth and fifth graders are able to participate in before- and after-school musical performing groups in band, orchestra, and chorus with instrumental music lessons given during the regular school day. Many students enjoy the comprehensive after-school clubs and activities program.
