James Dean is a 2001 made for TV biographical film about James Dean starring James Franco as the title character. The movie aired on TNT in 2001. The film was nominated for and won several awards.[1] Franco won the Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television and Michael Moriarty won an Emmy award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for their performances in the film.[1] The movie is told in a linear style,[2] chronicling Dean's rise from a struggling actor to a mega-watt movie star.[2] The film also briefly explores studios politics and policies in the 1950s.[3]
Franco was cast as Dean after a casting search that spanned New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and several other cities.[4] Franco became so immersed in the role that he went from being a non-smoker to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day for the role, but has since quit the habit. [5] Franco also learned to ride a motorcycle, play the guitar, and play the bongos during his preparation for the film.[5]
Of his performance Franco remarked, "I tried to show how personal James Dean made each of his roles and how the roles so strangely paralleled his real life. He was a very dedicated artist who would sacrifice anything for his work. His emotional life and turmoil drove this tortured man to become something great, and it has been a dream come true to play him."[4] The movie was directed by Mark Rydell who also directed On Golden Pond and knew Dean personally.[5]
