James Curtiss (also Curtis) (April, 1803; died: November 2, 1859; originally buried in City Cemetery). Twice served as Mayor of Chicago, Illinois (1847-1848 and 1850-1851) for the Democratic Party.

Curtiss arrived in Chicago from New York, New York in 1835 and opened a law office. When an addition was added to Chicago in 1839, it was called Carpenter and Curtiss for Curtiss and developer Philo Carpenter.

Originally buried in City Cemetery, when the Cemetery was moved to make way for Lincoln Park, his remains were lost.
