James Chilton died on the Mayflower in December 1620. His wife died during that winter as well. According to legend, his daughter, Mary Chilton, was the first of the Mayflower passengers to step onto Plymouth Rock.
According to Provincetown's memorial marker, "James Chilton was the only signer of the Mayflower Compact who died at Cape Cod."
