James Bruce Scott

Scott James Bruce,(1892 – 1974) Major-General in the Indian Army known for commanding the 1st Burma Division in the Burma Campaign.

From 1935 to 1938 he was the commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion 8th Gurkha Rifles. He was sent to be command the 1st Burma Brigade, in Burma from 1939 to July of 1941 when he was put in command of the 1st Burma Division. During the Japanese invasion of Burma, in the retreat from Rangoon his division was trapped in the vicinity of Yenangyaung and his force had to fight its way out of the encirclement to link up with the force sent to rescue it.

On 20th of June 1942 he was made Inspector of Infantry in India and then until March 1943 commanded the 39th Indian Light Division. From March 1943 to August 1945 he was District Officer of the Peshawar District in India and retired in 1947.
