[edit] Early life
Born in Sacramento, California, U.S., James was the oldest of two children.
James was a young Baptist pastor before suffering from a drug addiction that led to being homeless. On October 23, 1996 James spent the night on a wet mattress behind a dumpster. It was then that he had a revelation that he must start practicing obedience.
After that night James sought shelter at a Baptist mission and then the Salvation Army, which helped James overcome his addiction. 8 months later he re-entered society without a drivers license, without credit, without a home, without a car and without a job.
However, within 6 years he was able to completely turn his life around. He was able to build a very successful Internet business. James refers to September 1, 2003, as his "freedom day," in reference to the day he said goodbye to his last "J.O.B."

He is a proponent of the 4-hour work week, which he maintains through the sales of his products and services, some of which are provided through his internship program. He spends some of his time in Costa Rica and the rest in Utah.
