The Battle of Assaye was fought in September 23, 1803 near the village of Assaye in south-central India. It was one of the decisive battles of the Second Anglo-Maratha War. Assaye is located near Jafrabad in Jalna district of Maharashtra. The battle was a decisive one in which the British were led by none other than Arthur Wellesley, who later became Duke of Wellington, and later the British Prime Minister.
In charge of a British and sepoy army of some 13,500 men, General Arthur Wellesley took on a major Indian force at least three times the size of his own at Assaye. The General later on went to defeat Napoleon in the battle of Waterloo in 1814. He himself describes the battle of Assaye as one of his finest battles.
The city of Jalna still bears ruins of a sprawling British Cantonment with an old cemetery still having graves of those killed in the Assaye battle.
