Talk:Jake and Steve Show
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For the sake of disclosure, I am the original author of this page.
I find it particularly interesting that this page has generated so much attention in the past couple of days. For people who have so little interest in the show, it would seem the would-be vandals have plenty to say. I think it only makes sense to ask those "contributors," a term I use loosely, to explain there disdain for the show and their motivation for vandalizing the page. I'll begin this discussion by laying out my reasons for writing the page.
I created the Jake and Steve Show entry for two reasons:
1. I chose to create a Jake and Steve Show entry because I believe that information about them didn't rightfully belong in the edutainment and leprosy sections of Wikipedia. Singling them out within those entries was nothing more than a weak publicity stunt, and (in the case of leprosy, at least) while funny, detracted from the overall message of those entries. I also believe them to be notable enough to warrant a page, as they are the only morning radio show at UA, a major college campus, and have made great strides in creating a name and brand for themselves. Like it or not, that makes them notable. I know, notability is subjective and contextual, but if they're not notable, how do the vandals explain how they even KNOW of the show and the Wikipedia entry in order to come vandalize it? The vandals' mere existence proves their notability.
So, the solution to my problem was to create a page specifically for them. There is significant precedent for a morning radio show with a pair of hosts on Wikipedia, and the page passed the test for notability within its first day, having been independently edited by myself and two other users, one of whom was in Virginia - well outside the regular listening audience.
2. I chose to create a Jake and Steve Show entry knowing it would be vandalized (just as Edutainment had been - see the "dumbtainment" comment - classic!), to make a mockery of the people who would choose to vandalize it. What I find humorous about the whole thing is that the vandals seem to misunderstand how the show and the page's existence is a mockery of them. Let me let you in on a secret: the bravado, the arrogance - it's a FARCE. It's fake, and it's a mockery of the simple-minded people who would take it at face value as reality. By responding to it as they have, the vandals have only fallen for the joke. These two guys, Jake and Steve, and now this page, are mocking the vandals. They're laughing behind their back every time a vandal changes this page because someone is buying into an act like a simple-minded sheep. And the typical vandal response would be to now say "Oh, I understand it, but it's just not funny." Well, of course it's not funny to the vandal - the joke is MAKING FUN OF THEM.
So please, if you don't understand what the show is about, feel free to sleep in or change the channel. You're only fueling what you don't like. Every time you respond on the CW message boards, or vandalize the Wiki, you're just giving them ammunition. Just some food for thought.
So tell us, why do you choose to vandalize the page?
