Hi. The article mainly describes a robotic application of computer vision, the Polly robot. The article says very little about the Polly algorithm in terms of what it actually does and how.

Some comments:

  • Don't see the recategorization as a "degradation". I only did it because it believe that (maybe incorrectly?) it fits the Application subcategory and that it should be better to have an article in a more specific category than a general one.
  • I agree that it appears like a stub, and there is also a subcategory for stubs in the CV category.
  • If you belive that the recategorization is incorrect, you should revert it. You know more about the article content than I do.

The computer vision stub category dissapeard just a few days ago. Apparently someone thought that it was redundant since there are more general stub classes, removed it, and put the articles in that category into the "Computer science stubs" category. --KYN 08:16, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I could have checked the history, but I was feeling lazy. :) I've looked at it now — and I think that if we can find a source for Bechdel meeting Rubin in Burlington in 1992, we should put it back in (with the proper citation, of course). Thanks. I am very quick to make changes. I do not worry about making big changes. In this case: (1) this is a small article that I expect few editors will read; (2) I am guessing it was posted by a Danish person to fill out the recent world-wide news about the riots; and (3) I know utterly nothing about the group. They could be trying to convert the unchurched, or they could just as easily be very conservative. I thought I would leave it alone, let it be ambiguous, rather then introduce an error. In the case where: [a] I think I know what was meant; OR [b] I expect editors to read the article frequently; I just go ahead and make the change. I am not at all shy.

Hi. I noticed you had added the source just after I posted! I concur with the having a preference for an animal welfare project, but in reality the animal rights project encompasses welfare and even animal use issues. There are members of the project from a range backgrounds (including those who experiment on animals themselves) and I think it is better for balance that everyone work together, than fragment into their own little mini-projects. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Barbie_Army.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Please note -- MER-C already deleted an image of Alison Bechdel which also already had the explanation that it was a promotional photo and also only appeared on Bechdel's site. I think this user is confused and consequently performing (presumably-unintentional by dint of ignorance) vandalism. --Jaibe 11:13, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

I've been going through a lot of images and giving them fair use rationales to keep them from being deleted, and I noticed this one. The rationale you put on Image:Barbie_Army.gif wasn't quite right; notice the one I replaced it with. The key thing to understand is that fair use rationales on Wikipedia are not primarily intended to satisfy any legal requirement, make a legal argument, or anything like that; rather, they are required to show, not merely that we can claim fair use on an image, but that we should claim fair use. A good rationale therefore needs to indicate (1) what article you're claiming fair use for, (2) why we need to claim fair use for the image in that article (what the image is being used for, in other words), and (3) why no free alternative could be used to do the things you described in (2). It is also important to note the quality of the image, whether it's of reduced quality, and whether it's likely to compete with the copyright holder or reduce the copyright's value. All of these things have legal implications, of course, but the main thing is to ensure that fair use images are used in Wikipedia only when there's a decent reason to do so... it's important to note what page you're claiming fair use for since, for instance, an image of a band might be fair use to identify that band, but probably would not be fair use if used to illustrate something on a general page about bands (a 'free' drawing of a non-existant band or some such thing could be used instead.)
