Jaiswal
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jaiswal is the designation shared by a number of communities including
- Jaiswar Rajputs
- Jaiswal Jains
- Jaiswal Kalwars or Jayaswals
All of them are mainly located in the Agra/Mathura region. The term Jaiswal indicated residents of a place named Jayas or Jais.
Some authors have identified Jais with Jais in Raibarely district. A legend identifies it as Jaisalmer. However there are ducumented mentions of Jaiswal Jains prior to settlement of Jaisalmer in 1156 AD. The famous Dubkund Jain inscription of 1088 AD is the earliest mention of the Jayas town. Apabhramsha Jain poet Lakshman had composed Jinadatta charitra in sam. 1275 and Anuvaya Rayana Payiiva in sam. 1313 both at Tihuangiri near Bayana[1]. Thus the place Jayas must have been in the vicicnity of Agra region.
