Jais is located at 26.25° N 81.53° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 101 metres (331 feet).

As of 2001 India census[2], Jais had a population of 24,366. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Jais has an average literacy rate of 42%, lower than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 50%, and female literacy is 33%. In Jais, 17% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Jais is the land of poets and most famous of poets is Malik Mohammad Jaisi who wrote Padmavat and Akhrawat. "Jaisi Samarak" has been constructed in his respect and memory. Another famous and respected poet of urdu Allamah Mani Jaisi, also hailed from Jais.

Jais is also famous for its renowned shia ulama and fuqaha (islamic scholars and jurists respectively) like (Sayyid Dildar `Ali al-­Naqawi al-­Nasirabadi) Ayatullah Dildar Ali Sahib known as "Ghufran Ma'ab" whose descendents are known to this day as Khandan-e-Ijtehad from which many of the renowned shia ulama of India have emerged like Maulana Sibte Hussain of Jaunpur, Ayatullah Syed Ali Naqi Naqvi, Maulana Kalbe Abid, Maulana Kalbe Sadiq and Imam-e-Juma Qaid-e-Millat Janab Maulana Kalbe Jawad Sahib who is presently the most renowned and acknowledged leader of shia community in India.

One famous personality of Jais of his time was Kable Abbas, a very successful lawyer of his time- a staunch nationalist-was the leader and president of All India Shia Conference,even before undivided India, and was fondly called Fakhr-e-Qaum (Pride of the community)by shias. He is known by this sobriquet even to this day.

Most successful and accomplished son of Jais of modern India is Syed Sibtey Razi, presently Governor of Jharkhand. He is senior leader of Indian National Congress, who has served Government of India and Uttar Pradesh in various capacities.
