Jairo Varela

Jairo Varela Martínez (born December 9, 1949 in Quibdó, Chocó) is a Colombian musician, composer and songwriter of Salsa music and other tropical genres. He made his first musical performances at the age of 8 with a folkloric group called “La Timba”. In 1978 Varela, with fellow Quibdeceño Alexis Lozano, formed the salsa music group Grupo Niche in Bogotá. He continues to actively perform and write for the group.

He is son of the Colombian poetess Teresa de Jesús Martínez Arce.
