Firing upon sensing the shadow would be nonsensical, since the shadow depends on the angle of the sun, which varies widely during the day. However, firing when a plane was detected as a contrast towards the bright sky, the angle towards it is known, and in case of a skilled operator, who flies steadily with the same speed beneath the enemy plane and knows to maintain the proper distance, a hit would be almost guaranteed. I guess the point of this weapon was that usually bombers did not have a weapon that was able to fire at an enemy plane at this angle.
