Charles “Charlie” Pittman starred as a crafty, outsized running back on defensive-minded team (Penn State 1966-1969), while Charles Anthony “Tony” Pittman shone as an undersized defensive back on a high-powered offensive team (1994). They were both starters for the Nittany Lions. And, each had to deal with national championships that could have been awarded their teams, but were given to other teams. The Pittmans played on three of Joe Paterno’s five undefeated teams.

Charlie Pittman never lost a game he started in high school and neither he nor Tony ever lost a game they started at Penn State.

Their combined college records are 45-0-1. In the sports world, that is almost a miraculous number. In football, there is no father-son tandem better at their game, record-wise, than the Pittmans.

New York Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi spent decades guiding NFL teams – the Baltimore Colts and Cleveland Browns in addition to the Giants. He helped guide the Giants to Super Bowl XXXV, orchestrated two NFC East Division championships and made the deal that brought talented young quarterback Eli Manning to the Giants. Accorsi knows football and the Pittmans’ record surprises even him.

“It’s unprecedented; it’s hard to believe,” Accorsi said. “Sure, [Penn State] got some raps on [its] schedule. But, that record for a father and son at the same university – and the son played in the Big 10 -- that is something mind boggling.”
