[edit] Chart Success

"Jaded" hit #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, where it remained for 5 weeks. It also reached #1 in Canada (airplay), #13 in the U.K. and Japan, and #17 in Latvia. The single was extremely popular among young audiences and was a pinnacle moment in Aerosmith's evolution as a pop act. With the exception of the #1 "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing", "Jaded" was the band's highest peaking single in eleven years, since "Janie's Got a Gun" reached #4 in 1990. "Jaded" was ranked #47 on Billboard's Year-End charts.

[edit] Lyrical Interpretation and Song Structure

The song's lyrics are about a girl who is "Jaded", and how the relationship the narrator has with the girl is sometimes "complicated", but repeatedly claims that "I'm the one that jaded you."

The song features jangling guitars, a danceable drum beat and bass rhythm, memorable, repeated choruses and bridges, and the repeated use of the word "jaded".

[edit] Cover Artwork

The single's artwork was somewhat controversial, featuring a naked girl holding an apple on the cover. The model in the artwork is Nicole West.

[edit] Music Video

The video for "Jaded" features Aerosmith performing in an elaborately-designed hall, and random clips of a "Jaded" girl (actress Mila Kunis). The song tells a story of a girl who has lost the ability to feel due to losing touch with reality.

There are two versions of the video, much of the footage is the same, though used in slightly different places, and some shots have alternate angles. Here are a few noticeable differences:

Place Version 1 Version 2
Opening Zoom in on stage quickly Zoom in on stage slowly
Middle Steven Tyler blows into camera Horse statue blows into camera
Forest interlude Steven Tyler is not shown when the music starts Steven Tyler is shown when the music starts

The video premiered on MTV on February 13, 2001 and was directed by Francis Lawrence.
