Hi, I'm taking a wikibreak till the end of the year to focus on completing my PhD. I'll probably dip in now and again but won't be taking on any major editing projects.

If messages are left for me on my talk page, unless otherwise requested I will generally reply here.

[edit] Re: Oscar Pistorius: Primary school

While I do not have any reference for Oscar's attending CKPS, I know for a fact that he did, because I went there with him. His recollections, alas, are not as fond as mine: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2005/04/27/sophil27.xml. Please respond back at my talk page. Cheers, Robertson-Glasgow 00:54, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

I should be able to find something when I return home in about three weeks. For the time being, let us leave the relevant information marked with [citation needed]. Robertson-Glasgow (talk) 02:03, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
For far exceeding your 'duty' as an altruistic Wikipedian. Nick Michael (talk) 17:14, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Why, how kind! Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:51, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] DYK result

Would just like to pop by and say thanks for all the help you've given me and my dad into getting featured on the front page. I'd give you a barnstar but I wouldn't want it to clutter up your already overflowing userpage barnstars.

Hope you don't mind, I 'stole' the DYK userbox from you! Thanks again. --Gwib (talk) 20:36, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

You're most welcome. Ah, I didn't make the connection – didn't realize you were Nick Michael's son. Nice to see a father-and-son editing team! You're most welcome to "steal" the userbox. It wasn't created by me, and I probably pinched it from someone else at some stage too. — Cheers, JackLee talk 21:18, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
I edit mostly on Simple English Wikipedia though, don't think of us as nepotists! I only add interwiki links here and got caught up in my fathers Virginals. --Gwib (talk) 16:50, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] John McFall (athlete)

Updated DYK query On 3 June 2008, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article John McFall (athlete), which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

[edit] Deserved

The Law Barnstar
for being fair, tolerant and constructive in the GA review of Criminal damage in English law. You could have just left it once you'd passed it, but you went the extra mile and improved it further to make this article one of the few GA's dealing with English criminal law. Many thanks. Rodhullandemu 18:30, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Thinking about it, if Common scold gets to be a Featured Article, do you think Criminal damage in English law would be a worthy candidate? --Rodhullandemu 19:30, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome, and thanks very much for the barnstar! As for your question, my feeling is that "Criminal damage in English law" will need more work before it stands a chance of achieving Featured Article status. I think the "Common law" and "Early legislation" sections will need to be fleshed out, and you will definitely need to refer to some standard secondary texts. As FAs are intended to represent the best that Wikipedia can offer, FA reviewers require articles to refer to all relevant offline material, including books, encyclopedias and scholarly articles. You will also need to comply with applicable Manuals of Style. If you don't think that there's much more you can add to the article, it may not be the best one to try to take to FA status. I've taken two articles to FA status, and both times found the process quite challenging. Click on "Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Richard Hakluyt" and "Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Emery Molyneux" to see the sorts of comments and queries I had to deal with. But I'd definitely encourage you to try for it! You should probably start by trying to get hold of some standard criminal law texts to see how they deal with the topic, and by doing some research to find relevant journal articles (if any).
P.S. What a coincidence – I was on the University of Birmingham's University Challenge team last year. We got as far as the second round before being knocked out by Magdalen College, Oxford, but with the satisfaction that the score was 210–200! — Cheers, JackLee talk 21:18, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
He he, thanks, it's up there already. I still have the videos somewhere of our attempts; we somewhat thrashed the London School of Economics by about 100 points in our first match, but got done over by Trinity College Dublin in the next match by the same margin. But then, we had Bamber Gascoigne (from whom I always got the impression that if you weren't Oxbridge, he wasn't really that interested), and you had Paxo. Did you go for a drink with him afterwards? On other notes, I followed up your "global" FA submissions and, er, I think I need to wind down a little before going through that amount of stress. Cheers! --Rodhullandemu 02:22, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
No, I'm afraid Paxman didn't take us out for drinks, but Grenada TV did give us vouchers for lunch at their staff canteen! Was Gascoigne as snappy as Paxman is? Apparently Gascoigne is a regular Wikipedia editor. You should try out some of the other features of the University Challenge userbox! Hope you do try to get one of your articles to FA status at some stage – it's hard work but quite satisfying if you succeed. — Cheers, JackLee talk 15:47, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Bamber was charming and not in the least snappy. I like the new Userbox, except we don't have a free image of BG on Commons to put into a version for "older" participants. I'll try emailing him & see if he will let us have one. --Rodhullandemu 16:09, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes, do. If he agrees, it can also be used on his Wikipedia page as well. If you'd like to use the userbox without the Paxman image, just substitute "image=shape" or leave out the "image" parameter altogether for the "UC" logo. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:03, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, he doesn't have email enabled, sadly, but I have left a request on his talk page. I'm sure he's affable enough to agree. --Rodhullandemu 16:09, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Singaporean ink painters as independent category

Hi Jack, thanks for putting Category:Singaporean ink painters under Category:Singaporean painters. I had created the ink painter category to seperate the painters who professes in Chinese or Muslim painting techniques which uses ink as their primary medium, from the painters using primarily Western mediums - hence the Category: Singaporean painters. It would be wrong to categorise ink painters under the Singaporean painters category, and I believe other comments about this categorization, from other users will follow when this Singaporean artists category becomes more and more developed, and receiving more readership awareness.

So i'm hoping you'd change the Singaporean ink painter category to its original main category, instead of being a subcategory. Thanks -- Marcuslim (talk) 04:34, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I see. Your suggested differentiation between Category:Singaporean ink painters and Category:Singaporean painters is not obvious to other editors. If you believe that the new category is going to grow substantially, I think it needs to be renamed to something like "Category:Singaporean ink painters using Chinese and Muslim painting techniques". However, personally think that there's not much point drawing a distinction between artists who paint using ink in Chinese and Muslim styles, and those who paint in the same medium using other styles; it seems like an overly narrow category. I would suggest not renaming the new category but widening its remit to include Singaporean ink painters who use other painting techniques (e.g., Western?). Also, I would leave Category:Singaporean ink painters as a subcategory of Category:Singaporean painters because ink painting seems a natural subtopic of painting in general. This issue may require input from other editors to gain a consensus. I've copied this discussion over to Category talk:Singaporean ink painters, and would suggest that you raise the issue at Talk:SGpedians' notice board and perhaps the talk page of a relevant art WikiProject, inviting them over to the category talk page to express their views. — Cheers, JackLee talk 09:50, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Current time in your signatures?

Please don't use the current time in your signatures. There is absolutely no reason to do this – the timestamp is used to tell when a comment was made. If all your comments have the same timestamp, then it will defeat this purpose. Gary King (talk) 03:43, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Whoops, sorry. To save on typing, I created a template at {{User:Jacklee/shortsig}} and had been substituting it, but it seems I misunderstood the purpose of {{CURRENTTIME}} and allied magic words. Is there any way to create a template that inserts an absolute (non-updating) date when substituted? — Cheers, JackLee talk 12:02, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
At the top of every Talk page, it gives the following suggestion:
This is a talk page. Please respect the talk page guidelines, and remember to sign your posts by typing four tildes (~~~~).
This will generate your signature and a timestamp. If you've seen other people insert timestamps, then I would imagine you would assume that there must be an easy way for others to do it besides doing something complicated and building your own template to insert it? It baffled me that you would go to such great lengths to insert the timestamp. Cheers! Gary King (talk) 15:17, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Well, you see, I created a fancy signature (like yours, actually) which uses different colours, and typing four tildes inserts that one. However, because that signature tends to take up three lines of wikitext, to avoid bloating GA and FA review pages where I'm likely to use the signature multiple times, I thought I would create a more basic one. However, I didn't realize that {{CURRENTTIME}} and allied magic words would insert constantly changing dates and times. Will have another think about how to solve that problem. — Cheers, JackLee talk 01:04, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

[edit] University Challenge

Thanks for the heads-up. I found Gracers vandalising last night and I see he's now been indef blocked. I will keep an eye on the other guy, but I suspect he's currently caught up in the autoblock. First foot wrong, he's toast. --Rodhullandemu 15:19, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
