[edit] German American

Hi Jack O',

I tried earlier today to have the page "semi-protected" against the repeated vandalism that you and I keep reverting. Unfortunately, the request wasn't granted (Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection). For what it's worth, you may also want to know that the problematic IP numbers are located in eastern Germany.

Have a good Sunday. Chincoteague 19:41, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

I looked it up on a celeb site, not sure of the site's direct name.It states that "Emily" was her name, though they are pretty sure about "Jamierelle/Jamie",it is not confirmed. You could take off the "Jamierelle",but "Emily" seems accurate. Alyssacarmillo 18:26, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Hey, when you get a chance, might you fix her filmography. You'll see what's wrong. You have been awarded these Jelly Beans from -The Doctor- Please, enjoy them.

Here are some Jelly beans for you. I love jelly beans as they have sugar in them and most people love sugar. But on the other hand just receiving somthing from somone else just makes you happy and also just giving this to you makes me happy. Hi Mad J, Just wanted to say hello and that I look forward to working with you again in the future. For the time being, I will try to edit only on talk pages since I'm coming off a 1 month block and do not want to go through that again. I really respect your efforts and hope you don't mind if I use you as a sounding board. If I become to annoying, please let me know :) Later! --Tom 13:35, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Oh hi! BTW, if you were working on stopping users with agenda, this one (and he has a few similar IPs) is cooking up a foul storm with the "Jewish American businesspeople" list and the like. Mad Jack 18:24, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
I'll check it out. Again, we need to provide more sources around here and less opinion. Anyways, I am going to try to be very low key,,,, for awhile at least :) --Tom 18:32, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
Full stream ahead :) So much for being low key. I just worked on Jewish-American mobsters and I am now tackling Italian-American mobsters. Should be fun. I'm mostly trying to remove ethnicity from the lead section of articles per WP:MOSBIO. If you see anything that doesn't look right or conserns you, please let me know. Again, I really respect the work you have done in the past for this project. Cheers! --Tom 16:19, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Jack. Your comments on TALK:List of Polish Jews were helpful but didn't entirely sink in. The list is now overwhelmed with Americans, ranging from Joe Lieberman to Russ Feingold. It's hard to hold it back myself. 141.213.211.83 23:04, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Knocking on doors

Dear Jack -

I have left the discussion. Let me just reply to something you once said on the "Jewish mathematicians" page: namely, that we don't hire private detectives, and that the people who are listed as "Jewish" generally identify as such. As it happens, much of the information here is based on what jinfo.org says - and the practices of the fellow keeping that site (not a professional journalist!) extend to listing as Jewish people who never wished to identify publicly as such, and who even, in quite a few cases, belonged to other religions. Take a look at the footnotes at jinfo.org.

Even if this were not the case, I would keep to my opinion that identifying people by bloodlines in a common venue is barbaric. "Ethnicity" is a general label for a vaguely defined group sharing a language, place, practices, etc. This is not something that "Jew" covers at all well. Rather, "ethnicity" has become a Troyan horse (here and elsewhere) for cataloguing by caste and blood. Bellbird2 13:18, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

there are at least three different user names that keep adding similar bits of information to the Channing Tatum article and I can tell almost certainly that it's the same person because the info is obscure and in each edit summary, Tatum's article is the only one messed with. The users are Sam Syms, Don Zerring and Sam Zaazzino (or something close to those, you'll see. Isn;t there some way to get them blocked. I mean, I;m assuming that's why the person keeps making new accounts... -FateSmiled&DestinyLaughed 14:04, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Jessie Matthews

I don't think Jessie Matthews was Jewish. Here is a quote from her autobiography:

Mrs Joel, Beattie's mother, was always kind to me. In many ways the Jewish community of Soho helped to stifle my hunger pangs. Humble Jewish families would impoverish themselves for years over a major event like a wedding reception. Little Jessie Matthews 'the ballet dancer', accompanied by one of her Jewish friends who knew where it was all hapenning, would be glad to attend and do a little dance, after which they would be awarded with as much food as they could eat. I used to go to all the Jewish receptions, the barmitzvahs, the circumcisions, any event where there was food around.

Jessie Matthews, Over My Shoulder: An Autobiography (p39)

Unfortunately, the book, while indexed on Google Books, is not fully browsable. However, neither it, nor Jessie Matthews: A Biography, make any references to Matthews being Jewish. Udzu 18:30, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

Well, the JC can sometimes be a bit eager in proclaiming 'Members of the Tribe': they recently described Kelly Osbourne as Jewish (she isn't) and Muriel Spark as halachically Jewish (ditto). I've traced the names of Matthew's immediate family, and they don't 'sound' East End Jewish: her father was George Ernest Matthews (son of William Matthews & Caroline Tilbrook) and her mother was Jane Townshend (daughter of Charles Henry Townshend and Margaret Welsh).
However, I guess it's probably best to leave things as they are, until somebody finds something more conclusive. Udzu
PS Happy Christmas, if appropriate!
I got the names of her parents and grandparents from Jessie Matthews: A Biography by Michael Thornton (Hart-Davis, MacGibbon Ltd, 1974). Like the autobiography, it can be searched on Google Book Search, but you only get a short extract at a time. Udzu

Excellent tidy-up of the page recently. I've read, viewed, and listened to many tellings of Jessie's life over the years with out ever seeing a mention of her being Jewish though - how about changing the ref to "the JC lists Matthews as being Jewish, although no mention of this is made in her autobiography"?. You'd think it would have be at least referred to in the World War II period, or when mentioning Jewish neighbours as in the passage above. Interesting and sad if Jessie felt she had to 'keep quiet' about it, but I dont think Wikipedia should assert that unless it's certain. There are other fairly famous Jesse/Jessica Matthews' out there, perhaps there's been a mix up at the JC? --PRL1973 14:26, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hmm

Thats very strange since i saw alot of people on the list before i edited it, with NO reference footnotes, but i'm guessing you were getting around to removing those unsourced people, right? -- Hrödberäht 04:17, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Do me a favor and search for the words "Romanian", and "swiss" in the article, and then tell me if they are not legitimate... well you know i just did that and the two times i searched i found NOTHING on "Romanian", and BOTH mentionings of "Swiss" also had "German" with them....very strange huh? Are you just looking at the name of the editor and reverting it without impulse? -- Hrödberäht 04:25, 28 December 2006 (UTC)
I already said i'm FINE with removing the unsourced information 2 times!!! but maybe you missed this: ""Taylor Dooley - ref says she's a "mutt" and "mostly Belgian". She says she is "mostly Belgian, with some German and English on my mom's side and Irish, German, English, and Sioux Indian on my Dad's side";how strange that you don't even bother to notice those key words! How about not being so lazy, and reading an ENTIRE ARTICLE ,AND TAKING OUT THE INACCURATE INFORMATION like i have EVERYDAY for the past 4 months.... -- Hrödberäht 04:48, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Back to Square One

We seem to be back to the beginning for Sienna Miller's article, pertaining to nationality (in this case being English, rather than British or simply 'American-born'). I think a Wikipedia discussion might be needed to create some concept of what national and sub-citizenship (as well as citizenship) is meant here and what criteria might be applied. The present system is article by article, and involves quite a bit of ignorant 'discussion', which does not lead to any actual debate, merely people expressing opinion without criteria to reinforce. Any ideas how this might be dealt with? Cheers, Roche-Kerr 18:18, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Oljames2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Oljames2.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Oden 04:56, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] IMDb

I was trying to track down stuff about imdb, and found this in the WP:RS archives:

This guideline currently lists the IMDB as a reliable source for movie credits. I propose this be removed. IMDB credits are just as unreliable as anything else on the IMDB, and often user submitted. 6 years ago, I uploaded the full cast and crew of a Christopher Walken film called "The Prophecy 3: The Ascent" into the IMDB. As a joke, I added popular B-movie actress Linnea Quigley to the cast, credited as a "Hooker". The IMDB fully accepted my addition. Quigley is still listed on that page (although she has been downgraded to "uncredited"). This credit is now also listed all over the net. Quigley was even asked about the role in this interview: "You had a small part as a hooker in The Prophecy 3 in 2000, did you have any scenes with Christopher Walken and what was he like?
I don’t think unless they used old footage that I’m in Prophecy 3. I have to see it sometime but I wish I could have worked with them. Damn, if you have seen it and I’m in it let me know." Mad Jack 22:16, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Interesting story, but the WP:RS text at the time only said that Writer's Guild of America credits on IMDb could be considered reliable. Anyway, I recently brought up the reliability of imdb on this FA candidate, and thought you might want to comment. Gimmetrow 02:32, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Hi Mad Jack, I am back AGAIN :) Iam getting into a little tizzy with Epee over using Jewish-American in the laed sentence on EVERY fencer he has created. He says because they are in the Jewish Hall of fame, that should sufice. I say no, lets keep Jewish-American out of the lead sentence. Anyways, I am not going to edit/revert at this point. I appreciate and respect your work as always. Cheers --Tom 14:39, 31 January 2007 (UTC) ps I will also copy Jayjg on this..

Hi MadJack. And Tom. We disagree, obviously, on this. The same old WP:MOSBIO thing again. I have discussed my thoughts at length, and do not think they have been responded to in full, though they have in part. Still, Pschemp is reverting even revisions (and Tom -- you are supporting her) that are consistent with MadJack's approach, which he demonstrated once, of mentioning Jewish in other than the lead of the article, such as (in his example) in the line of being inducted into the Jewish Hall of Fame. Can you two help me straighten her out? Thanks.--Epeefleche 16:51, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi MadJ, I have given up with Epee since this has been going on for a while. Just wanted to let you know he is using your name [1] in his edit summaries. This just reads silly and appears very "forced", imho. Its one thing in a full blown biography, but just inserting ethnicity for its own sake? Anyways, hopefully this will be my last comment about Epee. Cheers! --Tom 18:01, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Opening Paragraph & Body of Bio: Nationality, Ethnicity, and Notablity -- and how those bear on mention in a bio of a person being Jewish

Hi. Below are some thoughts on the below.

1. Wikipedia Manual of Style. The Wikipedia Manual of Style is our guide. It states, in Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies), as follows: "The opening paragraph should give .... Nationality (In the normal case this will mean the country of which the person is a citizen or national, or was a citizen when the person became notable. Ethnicity should generally not be emphasized in the opening unless it is relevant to the subject's notability.)"

2. Nationality. The first question, then, is whether the Jews are a nation. If so, that information belongs in the opening paragraph.

The Wikipedia entry for "Jew" indicates, inter alia, that Jews are "members of the Jewish people (also known as the Jewish nation ...)."

Thus, one can maintain that in the (abnormal) case of Jews, who consist of a nation that has been dispersed from its homeland (largely), inclusion of the fact that a person is Jewish in the bio's opening paragraph is called for by Wiki MOS policy.

With other religions, often the religion is distinct from the nation. In other words, there was not a Protestant, or Buddhist, or Christian, or Hindu, or Aethiest nation per se. They are not a "people" and a "nation." Jews, oddly, are not just a religion. They are also a nation. Dispersed (largely) for a couple of thousand years.

3. Ethnicity. If one were to not consider the Jews a nation, despite the above Wiki definition, the question as to whether one should include that information in the opening paragraph of a person's bio could be answered by the the MOS reference to ethnicity. "Ethnicity", under the Wikipedia definition, includes among its subsets people who have a shared nationality (not the focus of the above exception, obviously) and those who share a religion. But, with Jews, much more than a shared religion is at issue, as the Jews also share a homeland and are a nation.

Thus, one would seem to find oneself pushed back to consider Jews in the "nationality" category, which calls for inclusion of a person's Jewishness in the openining paragraph of the bio.

4. Notability Exception. Even with ethnicity, Wiki policy calls for its mention in the opening if it is relevant to the subjects's "notability." To determine what notability means here, one must go to Wikipedia:Notability (people), the notability criteria guideline for Wikipedia.

That guideline states, inter alia, that "Notability on Wikipedia for people is based on the following criterion: The person has been a primary subject of multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the person. This criterion includes published works in all forms, such as newspaper articles, magazine articles, books, scholarly papers, and television documentaries ...."

Thus, where one is noted as being a Jew in multiple non-trivial published works whose source is independent of the person, such as newspaper articles, magazine articles, books, and the like, they would appear to meet the notability requirement, and thus should have that fact included in the opening paragraph of their bio.

(Query as well whether one might argue that where a person is included in an ethnicity list on Wiki, as under "Black Jews," their ethnicity is notable.)

5. Mention Later in the Bio. Even if: a) for some reason Jews were not viewed as a nation, and b) the fact that a person was Jewish were not notable (i.e., they were not in books of Jewish Sports Legends, or Jewish Halls of Fame, or did not otherwise have their Jewishness noted), that would only be reason to suggest under Wiki policy the fact that they are a Jew should not be mentioned, generally, in the opening paragraph.

There is no suggestion at all that it should not be mentioned further down in the article.

Mad Jack, I know that you have given much though to this subject, and have written that ethnicity, if properly sourced, should and usually is mentioned at some point in their article. Musicpvm seems to agree.

I think that some people have bought into the first policy mentioned above, not considered the exception, not considered the definitions of nationality and notability, and extended that definition to an all-out ban on mentioning that someone is Jewish.

Your thoughts?

Neither do I, but the article says, "Seemingly being Orthodox Jews has led many to assume that Betty herself was intended as an overtly Jewish character . However later episodes, such as the 1936 short "Be Human," introduced Betty's Grandpa, who was portrayed very much as an 'old timer' in the style of such characters from Wild West films.", so I felt that she shouldn't be on there, if she's never actually stated as being Jewish. Hmm, good point. I had a look on youtube for her parents, and her father is wearing a yarmulke, but her mother doesn't seem to be doing anything Jewish (maybe Betty's only Jewish on her father's side? Here is the gist of being "Jewish" for Wikipedia purposes (or being "Italian-American", "Irish-American", etc.). If a reputable source called a person "Jewish", regardless of whether that person's mother, father, or paternal great-grandfather was Jewish, then they are Jewish for Wikipedia purposes unless there is an equally or more reliable source that says they are "not Jewish". This is the same for any X-American label. I believe there are sources - mostly excited headlines - that call George Felix Allen "Jewish", therefore it is fine under WP:V and WP:NOR. Mad Jack 08:55, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Why don't you tell this to User:Jayjg and his unacceptable, tyrannical, and unreasonable behavior at the List of Jewish American businesspeople article that myself and others spent quite a bit of time building up. He specifically singled out that particular article (pushing his own POV agenda, accusing me of "pointing out every rich Jew in America") for a mass deletion/reversion, citing "failure to source every name" even though well over 90% of ALL the lists of Jews and others on Wikipedia aren't sourced; to point out his blatant hypocrisy I subsequently tagged most of the articles (lists of Jews) that I could find that didn't have a source for every single name (per Jayjg's 'new policy'). If sources aren't added soon TO EVERY NAME on these lists (or if the businesspeople list isn't rightfully restored) I will ask Jayjg to start blanking those lists just as he did the Jewish American businesspeople article. I won't even harp on about the deletion of Category:Jewish American businesspeople, except for the fact that it was a triple intersection category and therefore its deletion meant that many of the people formerly in that category had their Jewish identity entirely lost to Wikipedia, sunk forever in to the mass oblivion of the too-broad Category:American businesspeople. --WassermannNYC 17:42, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Helping out with the Unassessed Wikipedia Biographies

Seeing that you are an active member of the WikiBiography Project, I was wondering if you would help lend a hand in helping us clear out the amount of unassessed articles tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Many of them are of stub and start class, but a few are of B or A caliber. Getting a simple assessment rating can help us start moving many of these biographies to a higher quality article. Thank you! --Ozgod 20:50, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ethnic-group lists deletion discussions

Hi, I noticed you participated in at least one of these three deletion discussions:

All three discussions have similar issues but are leaning in different directions, so you may want to participate in the others, if only for the sake of consistencey and to avoid accusations that Wikipedians are being unfair to some group or groups (which is something that concerns me). I'm asking everyone who participated in one discussion to participate in the others. I apologize for bothering you if you already have participated in the others. Best wishes, Noroton 04:43, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Hey Mad Jack, thanks for your comments

I usually copy my reply and thread here but didn't won't to clutter things to bad. I reponded on my page. Thanks again, --Tom 00:46, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey MadJack. I'm trying to work with user:Epeefleche but now he is adding that every Jewish baseball player is Jewish under miscellaneous. I guess my suggestion of working that material into the article in a suitable fashion has gone on dead ears. I don't think this is approriate and is boarderline offensive. Anyways if you could take a look at his contributions and provide imput. My latest idea was to try to pick one article, Albert Axelrod and make it kick ass to show how its done. Anyways, cheers, --Tom 02:22, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] William Monahan article at FAC

Thanks for the edit. I wasn't aware of WP:MOSBIO. Would you mind doing a copyedit of the article? It's entirely written by myself and I'm hoping that some other folks can help to improve it. If you see something in the article that you can improve, I would appreciate it very much. Best, BillDeanCarter 17:27, 12 March 2007 (UTC)

Ha. Very cool. I was wondering who wrote the Rachel Bilson article. It's well done.-BillDeanCarter 17:29, 12 March 2007 (UTC)
Many thanks for the copyedit and comments. I replied to your comments on my talk page. They really did help the article and if you have any other comments I'd like to hear them.-BillDeanCarter 02:11, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
This one sentence bothers me still. "The previous workload, consisting of adapting other storytellers' worlds and dramatizing historical periods, did not deter Monahan a few months later from taking on Marco Polo's Far East explorations as the storyline for his next screenplay.". That's how it looks now. I'm kind of trying to stop and say, he adapted other authors' works as well as made screenplays out of history, and then with that workload went on to write more. Any suggestions of how to rephrase it?-BillDeanCarter 02:56, 13 March 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, the Marco Polo sentence is much better now. Thanks. His lost vision was basically scenes from his shooting script, but I haven't found any more details. 45 minutes of extra footage encompasses a lot. As for the "prolonged vegetable state" phrase, it made less sense as time passed.-BillDeanCarter 09:43, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Need help, whats new :)

Hi MadJack, could you check out my discussion with User:Runcorn. The article in question is Karl Popper. Should the Jewish categories be used? I can imagine your answer, which I believe is similar to mine. Do we have verifiable, reliable sources that call him that? Well, we have this [3]. Wait, while I am writing, Runcorn provided some other sources, this might be over before it got started :). I happen to stumble onto this article and the early life section is very convaluted imo. Did Popper convert or was he born to parents who had converted? If somebody is of Jewish "decent" should they be in the category.ps I found out today I am 25% Jewish ;) YAHOOOO! :). Thanks as always! --Tom 23:29, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Lastkiss.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Lastkiss.jpg.

Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 48 hours after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. —Angr 05:07, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WP:FLAG

Hi! I noticed that you recently removed the flag icon from Elisha Cuthbert's article, and cited WP:FLAG in support of your action. Please do not take my inquiry the wrong way (I actually don't like the flag icons), but I am wondering whether an essay is enough of a basis upon which to take such an action. Are you systematically deleting the flags from infoboxes or just when you happen upon them? Again, I mean no offense -- I am just curious.--Vbd (talk) 08:07, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Attempt to delete subcategory of Jewish athletes

Well, they are trying to delete a subcategory of Jewish athletes again. This time, figure skaters. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2007_April_14#Category:Jewish_figure_skaters . I pointed out to the originator of the attempt that we had addressed this general issue already with the main category and with Jewish fencers, where the attempts failed. Still, they insist on trying to delete this category. Any help by your weighing in on the issue would be appreciated. [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Cdsprouse3.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Cdsprouse3.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

[edit] User to keep an eye on

One who is evidently pushing some sort of pro-German or German-American agenda, most recently edited at [4] and [5]. [edit] Please warn vandals after reverting their edits

Hello. I'm in agreement with the recent revert you made to Emile Hirsch. You may already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit was inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Thank you. Belovedfreak 10:59, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

The reason I mentioned it is that warning vandals does seem to stop them vandalising in the future, in quite a lot of cases. When they keep vandalising after being warned several times, they can then be blocked. Anyway, no problems - you obviously do good work reverting vandalism. Belovedfreak 17:43, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Kevin Costner

Hi! Just a short note to say - thanks for your input on the Kevin Costner article. I had a look at the talkpage, looking for the reasons behind the anon's adding the link with Time magazine reference to his ancestory, and the reverts by various editors including yourself. Could you give me some background so I can help you out? Thanks! Best Rgds, --Trident13 17:50, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Oh, it's simply that the anon is adding that his father was German American and his mother was Irish American. But the source - Time - doesn't say that specifically - just mentions that his family had Irish, German and Cherokee ancestry as a whole. Mad Jack 23:27, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
Thank You! Rgds, --Trident13 23:40, 14 May 2007 (UTC)
HELP - I've almost given up with this Anon! The Anon from ip address 84.140.XXX.XXX is orginating from a Deutsche Telekom owned IP address. My guess is that the address rotates as the Anon is subscriber to DT's Broadband ISP service - so it works much like AOL's rotating IP address for thei subscribers. What do you suggest? I added a load of details to the article with references, and all the Anon does is revert back to the version that states his father is German American, normally having also adjusted the German American article before that. Suggestions? Rgds, --Trident13 17:31, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Looks good to me, good work adding sources. I think the only thing we can do is just keep reverting. His IP changes daily. Mad Jack 18:38, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
Take a look at this edit record from the German Wikipedia. Note the last edit of 13 Mai, by IP 84.140.106.9 - not long before, the same IP address turns up on the English Wiki Kevin Costner article editing. The IP address would be the same if the Anon kept logged in. Rgds, --Trident13 22:16, 16 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New request for adminship

Hi, Mad Jack. I've been nominated by a fellow editor — from out the blue, believe me — to be an admin. That's a lot of work and responsibility; I was asked to do it once before, and didn't think I was either ready or needed. But User:Steve block and User:ChrisGriswold, who came out of WikiProject Comics and know the nuances of comics, are on indefinite hiatus, and someone who knows comics, the basis of some of the biggest things in pop culture, should be an admin. Some of my Comics Project peers are also qualified, and if they were to step up, I would step down from this nomination. But we need a comics-knowledgeable admin in any event. If you'd like to enter the discussion either way, you can go to Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Tenebrae2. Thanks so much,-- Tenebrae 17:15, 15 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Hjomugshot.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Hjomugshot.jpg. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Paris Hilton

Is there a reason why you think Paris Hilton should not be included in the opening paragraph in the German American article? As far as I am concerned she is more "German" then much of the others listed. She is Norwegian/German - German making up about 75% of her ancestry. Her mother is German-American and her father is German-Norwegian. Her great-grandfather, Conrad was 50%German 50% Norwegian and her great-grandmother, Mary Laufweiler was a full blooded German-American (a daugther of a German immigrant). Actually, Paris Hilton herself mentioned it on German national TV that she was: GERMAN. Is it just because it's Paris Hilton or something? Is she too embarassing to be German? Until you give a good reason why she shouldn't be included, I am going to keep it there. User:VeronicaPR

I don't quite get how she is 1/16th German? Do you mean to tell me she is a mix of 16 different ethnicities? Not a chance. I have been following every bit of news and devouring whatever reading material I can get on this girl for a good part of the past 3-4 years. Her fathers side is almost entirely German, besides a bit of Norwegian (German ancestors of his actually went from Germany to Norway - which is how the Norwegian plays into the whole thing). Her mother has Italian, German and Scottish. Again, the Italian and Scottish fade to almost nothing because she is predominantly German on one side and then she has it on her mothers side. Paris Hilton identifies herself as a German-American. Watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gckurXqc_xU . [edit] Zac Efron

Go over and look at the Freddy Adu talk page. There was a similar quote in the entry to his article talking about him being one of the most exciting young soccer players. The general consensus there was that the quote represented ONE persons pov, and furthered the pov of the person who posted it, and gave the article more of a fansite tone, than an encyclopedia tone. For every critic who likes a movie, or likes an actor...there is another who dislikes one. I have no doubt that if a sourced quote were added saying Efron's performance in a certain movie or television show was terrible, it would be removed as POV or as an attack sentence, thus furthering the biased position of the page and its POV tone. I'm a firm believer that the project should include verifiable facts, not sourced opinions. As is, the Zac Efron page reads more like a fanpage, than a biographical entry in an encyclopedia. Batman2005 21:31, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

I believe there's a way to SHOW that Efron is a "teen star" rather than using somebody's opinion. The whole thing is subjective...I think he's a marginal actor (as are most teen actors these days) but I digress. He's certainly a big name at the moment, and that can be shown through his filmography, awards he may have won, appearances on shows which focus on hot topics or people at the forefront of entertainment (Today Show, late night talk shows, presenting at awards shows), etc. It's not a "FACT" that he's "arguably the biggest teen star" it's an "OPINION." Look at Brad Pitt, Marlon Brando, Jack Nicholson, Tom Cruise, Josh Hartnett, George Clooney, etc. All these people have MILLIONS of press snippets about them, calling them "hollywoods hottest _________," or "Amercica's _______" yet none of these are mentioned in the entry paragraphs, or for the most part in the articles. What IS included are awards which allow the reader to draw his/her own conclusion as to the stature of the subject, rather than being told what one person thinks of the subject. A well-written, fact based, article will sufficiently show that the subject is notable to a large audience. Batman2005 10:33, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
I removed the crap about Nicholson, again...because it's pov and slants the article towards a "fanboy" tone. Each of the things you highlight need removed, not sourced. Efrons bit needs removed. ANYTHING that gives an article a slant towards anything but neutral needs removed. Cruises page could easily SHOW that he's one of the most successful in hollywood by presenting facts (seven straight $100 million earning films). Clooney's could SHOW that he's A-list by show what movies he's been in and contrasting that with awards won or nominated. Simply put, Efrons page sounds like a fan page, not an encyclopedia, and it's not just that quote. The quote needs to go, and REAL information needs to be input that will SHOW that Efron is this big star that people think he is. Batman2005 23:18, 19 June 2007 (UTC)
My point is that WE don't make the conclusions on his status. Any conclusion we draw on his status, such as saying, "one of hollywoods leading men," is Original Research and POV. Perhaps there is a place for the quote in the article in some sort of "Critical Reception" subheading, where critiques of his acting and status, both positive and negative are included at an equal balance. Batman2005 18:19, 20 June 2007 (UTC)
Absolutely, but doing so slants the article towards the pov of whoever picked out the quote. I suspect that if I posted one of the quotes about Efron being overhyped and a poor actor, it would be deleted as pov or an attack sentence. Yet we allow as blatant pov on the opposite end of the spectrum and give the page a fansite tone. Batman2005 11:01, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
You wouldn't. You'd put the facts. His name, date of birth, country of origin, profession, and any big movies he might have been in. The rest of the article is used to show notability by using facts. Batman2005 08:30, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

What's he been featured in, movies, magazines, "Hottest Stars under 25" or whatever it is that those polls are. Inputting this would surely show that he's a youth star.

[edit] the way i think it should be

Since french moved to the New World at the same time as wasps, they were able to spread out creating small and different communities. It's unlike italians, irish, russians who came a century ago. So french-american should comprise all people from all these communities, the main streams being cajun (a word who came from saying acadian with a southern accent) and acadian. But we're all french-americans, to make these articles better there should be a main french-americans' list and smaller acadian, cajun, etc.. list. Abdelkweli 14:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 3 revert rule

you have as well, or faked it. it does make a sense. Think of the french-americans as the US and the cajuns, acadians, as various cities of the US. it does make a sense to differentiate them kiddo. Abdelkweli 21:39, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] italian americans

if you had read my post correctly you would have realized i mentioned italian-americans because they were not different enough to make two lists and a main list. but you still sound very young with your recurrent comments who really dont make any sense. [edit] Denise proof

Hi Jack,

I have posted 3 websites that show Denise Richards is of Welsh and Croatian ancestry. Hope this is enough proof!! If not google and see for yourself.

Are you able to add her to the list of Croatian Americans? Iam new to this site!!! Running cool 03:46, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

I think every celebraty has ancesty listed on Wikipedia and so should Denise. It's trivial and not that important in most cases but fans find it interesting. Look at Prison Break's Wentworth Miller for example - can you find me proof of all those ancestors???

Why has the ancesty of Denise been deleted? Strikes me as odd! Considering it was there before without anyone complaining.

I think you should allow it to stand for now until proven otherwise.

I don't want to get into a edit war so i will trust you and Yala will be fair in this matter.

Elvis German ancestry is confirmed

Maybe very interesting for you MAD JACK

One more point about the german ancestry. I am not a native english speaker. When I was talking about Elvis' ancestry I thought Elvis fans or other interested people might want to know where his roots are. I read about his ancestry often but these articles which had proven facts like birth certificates for instance usually reached back only some generations (2 or 3). What I meant when I was talking about the ancestry was his oldest known relatives - the root. And a man named Valentin Pressler who lived in Rheinland-Pfalz in a village named Niederhochstadt was born there in 1669. He immigrated in 1709/10 to Maryland where he died in 1736 in a town named St. Stephens Parish. Valentin Pressler had four children all born in Germany. One son Andreas born in 1701 moved to Ohio /Indiana. He did not changed his name and all the Presslers who still live there are his descendants. Valentin's youngest son Anton married and settled in North Caroline. Being the only German there he changed his named first to Preslar what was proably more common to the mostly english-speaking immigrants . The Presslers are and were catholics like most people of that area in Germany. In the documentary which I mentioned before named ELVIS-O-RAMA was an interview with the Genealoge and Heimatforscher Gerd Pressler. He or better his family come from a vine-dresser dynasty and wanted to know how far this tradition reaches back. He is no Elvis fan, no music writer or musician. He found about Valentin Pressler out still not knowing about his connection with Elvis. He got in contact with Donald W. Presley from Little Rock, Arkansas who has family relation with Gerd Pressler and with another man who did research and has some far family relation named Edwin C. Dunn(e) from Albuquerque, New Mexico. They had found out that not only Anton changed his name Pressler to Preslar but one of Andreas sons, too but in Presley. All this is confirmed.
What it makes the facts so believeable are the different ankle from where the research began:

1.It started in Rheinland-Pfalz not in the U.S. 2.There where researchers from different countries working together. 3.The researches had nothing to do with Elvis (no fans, music historians or writers) 4.It happened by accident. 5.It is so unspectacular

And sometimes I suspect that Elvis-fans and some music researchers don't like that unspectacularity.

The "king of rock and roll" has german roots? That does not fit together - even in Germany. I heard of the german ancestry before but thought it was made up. The documentary changed my mind. No old indian Chief or Rabbi or scottish sailor who fought John L. Sullivan but a catholic german vine dresser and grower from a little village in Germany are Elvis' roots. That sounds so boring it has to be true!

So that is what I meant when I was talking about proven facts ( without quotation marks)! I told you the sources - just take it or leave it. If you like to write about your fantasies and wishes in wikipedia instead of the facts it's all right with me. I am a fan of Elvis and can understand this 100%. But I only like to inform the open minded music lovers about my discovery who did not have the chance to see the documentary and want to know facts.
To the user Rikstar: Instead of warning me to be careful with something you call aspersions and what I call my opinion (even if you don't agree with it or/and don't like it) you should ask yourself if people generally have a tendency to believe what they like to believe. I think many people who like to do serious research are caught in a trap that they have some things on their mind they like to find out or like to accept at least before starting the research. And exactly this things they will find out. They are doing research to confirm their existing opinions. Other traces which do not confirm their already existing opinion will be ignored - someone might have to change his or hers opinion. I think Elvis is an american legend and rock and roll is an american art or pop art. I think many admirers wish him a spectacular background ( like blues fans who are talking about Robert Johnson selling his soul to the devil etc.). Maybe if Elvis had indian ancestry he would be a real american hero having his roots in America not in old Europe or being jewish like Bob Dylan he would be a great link in a long history of fantastic musicians. It would be fantastic and would make sense but reality sometimes doesn't make sense.

Best Regards---Franco, Deutschland —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.162.41.160 (talk) 15:51:32, August 19, 2007 (UTC)

I am no expert on Elvis's ancestry, but this material sounds reasonable. The main points should be included in the article. Onefortyone 18:48, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Elvis Presley was a distinctly American mixture of several ethnic groups, including: Scottish, Jewish, Cherokee, and possible German ancestry

That is not 100 % correct. It is more the other way around : the german roots (as already mentioned Valentin Pressler) are confirmed. The other ancestry could be possible but are not confirmed. Every generation could be traced back til Valentin Pressler (at least on paper - what really happened only god knows). The link you set in the article about the scottish roots are almost 100% wrong. The mentioned Andrew Presley was a son of Andreas Pressler and the grandson of Valentin Pressler. As User Rikstar already mentioned Presley is an english/scottish name and because of that obvious resemblance with the german name Pressler it was changed. It would not have made sense to change a german name into russian or chinese.

In a radio feature about the before mentioned documentary ELVIS-O-RAMA on german radio it was stated that it is proably impossible to find about Elvis ancestry starting the research with Elvis' parents. The last confirmed (100%) generation considering Elvis ancestry are Elvis' Grand parents. To find out more about his roots a research had to start in Europe and lead to Elvis Grand parents. The big problem is where to start?!

The other point is who wants to know? As long as nothing (or only the paternal side) is confirmed everyone can speculate, fantasize or write books about unconfirmed theories and people will be interested and maybe buy the fanzines, books and newspapers or watching documentaries. The legend Elvis has outgrown Elvis the man by far. People are interested in the legend not in the facts. And if all facts would be known (not only about his ancestry) the legend Elvis would be dead and gone.

To come to an end: The radio feature stated that Elvis has german roots. And that is the only thing that is confirmed. He has much anglo-american ancestry on his paternal side, too. On his mother's side everything is possible and almost nothing confirmed. The jewish and cherokee connections can't be confirmed but could be possible as another theory that there could be gypsies in his ancestry. I hope some people did find my infos helpful to improve the article about Elvis ---- Greetings from Deutschland, Franco —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 87.162.54.254 (talk)

[edit] Bruno Maddox at FAC

Hey Mad Jack. I remembered that you helped me out with a copyedit of my article about screenwriter William Monahan. Would you mind commenting on my latest article about Bruno Maddox at WP:FAC?-BillDeanCarter 13:02, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the copyedits. I had to put back in scathing reviews because it is a notable characteristic of his. That first sentence in the lede has been beaten about quite a bit. I guess it will settle eventually.-BillDeanCarter 08:11, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
But the sentence doesn't make sense otherwise: "where he developed a reputation for writing scathing reviews that would later help him land a job as an editor at SPY magazine." It doesn't make sense that he developed a reputation for writing reviews. The qualifier scathing explains it, and the next sentence is an elaboration.-BillDeanCarter 21:31, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Burt

For one if your are supposed to READ the discussion page, before trying to do a major edit. 2. You also need to read up on using books as citations. They have to be availabe to a majority of the wiki users.(the one you submitted was a small biography) Try reading his Auto-biography instead. 3. His father was never a COWBOY, his father was in the military in WWII. Before becoming a policeman. Virtualy your whole edit is wrong. He still to this day states his italian heritage. Not to mention you tried to remove a valid citation from Time magazine of an interview with Burt to replace it with a non-valid citation of a book not available to a majority of the public. There are a few other reasons that book isn't acceptable by wiki standards if you want me to point them out too. But if you do your wiki research you will find out this stuff yourself. If you add something credible with a proper citation it will stay. Until then It will be removed, by me or one of the about 6 people that protect this article, as well as keep it at a NPOV. So before you try and add the junk you tried to add that isn't valid, take it to the talk pages first, and you will see others will remove the same things I did. Also if you go to Burt's talk page you will see someone responded before me. About the stuff you added. Oh and I don't want to forget all that stuff has been hashed through with wiki admins as well.Rogue Gremlin 17:49, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Mafinki Serame

A tag has been placed on Mafinki Serame requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
