[edit] King George V class, 1939

With the increasingly lax treaty regulations on battleship size and power following the First London Naval Treaty, plans for the King George V class were laid down to provide the Royal Navy with a modern and efficient battleship force. Although the Second London Naval Treaty placed some restrictions on the design, the absence of Japan from the treaty and the increasing belligerance of Nazi Germany made the development of the new battleships a major priority, especially with the construction of the Bismarck class of Germany and the vast Yamato class in Japan. Built at staggered intervals begining in the late 1930s and continuing throughout the war, the King George V entered service at different times and served in a range of actions; King George V helped sink the Bismarck, Duke of York sank the Scharnhorst, Prince of Wales was destroyed off Malaya in the opening days of the Pacific War and Anson and Howe with the other survivors participated in the Okinawa Campaign in that conflict's final months. The four survivors of the class were too expensive for continued operation after 1945 and were all placed in reserve in 1949 and broken up in 1957.

[edit] Lion class

During the late 1930s, plans were developed at the Admiralty for construction of a class of four new battleships to replace the Revenge class, which were becoming increasingly obsolete. These plans called for the biggest battleships yet built in Britain, armed with an 18" main battery and 15" thick armour. Construction of the first two units began in 1939 with two more to follow a year later. However by 1940 it was increasingly clear in Britain that the sea war would be decided in the Atlantic and that the considerable resources being expended on the Lion class would be better served in the construction of convoy escorts. The class was abandoned in the summer of 1940 and the incomplete hulls of Lion and Temeraire broken up by 1942.

[edit] HMS Vanguard

The last battleship to be constructed worldwide was also the largest ever to serve in the Royal Navy. HMS Vanguard was constructed by John Brown & Company at Clydebank in 1939 and was the only new battleship designed and constructed during World War Two, the Lion class having been suspended as a waste of resources. Vanguard alone was retained because the turrets intended for her use were already exisiting, having been constructed twenty years previously for the Glorious class battlecruisers, which were converted to aircraft carriers before completion. Vanguard never fired her borrowed 15" guns in anger, her construction not being completed until 1946 after the conclusion of the Second World War. She performed numerous duties as fleet flagship until she was decommissioned and sold for scrap in 1960, the last battleship of the Royal Navy.
