Pheo-Con was originally formed as a spoof on traditional Anime conventions. Convention staff would make trips to local retail stores to obtain last minute supplies for the convention. One staff member, known as “Pheo”, was a regular for these excursions. From the sleep deprived and overworked minds of the staff in attendance, the Pheo-Con idea sprang forth – and shopping trips were quickly referred to as such.

[edit] History

In October 2007, the first “Official” Pheo-Con was hosted at Oni-con, Houston, TX. This was (as all others), a trip to Wal-mart to purchase supplies. The difference, however, was that this trip was open to non-staff members, and was at this point officially named Pheo-Con.

[edit] Pheo-Con 2k8.1

Pheo-Con 2k8.1 was held at Ikkicon 2, in February 2008.

Aproximate attendance: 50

Guests: Carrie Savage

There it Pheo-Con saw an expansion which has led to the present explosion of popularity. Placed on the panel schedule, Pheocon hosted a panel in which badges were issued to those in attendance. Attendee bags included such items as bubbles, medical face masks, candy necklaces and pixie sticks, and 3 red plastic firefighter figures (comparable to the small green “army men” toys). Additionally, award ribbons with random statements were given for such accomplishments as:

  • Being the first attendee to arrive.
  • Sitting the furthest from other attendees and staff.
  • Being Lee (Lee is the Director of Oni-con).
  • Being the most Jewish (given to Isaac Markowitz, Board Member of Atsuicon).

Closing ceremonies for the event included a Silly String fight and "dead dog" event held at a nearby restaurant.

[edit] Influences

The Pheocon concept has developed a fan-following and "inspired" copy-cat events; such as Walcon: the “Walmart Convention” that was seen at Anime Matsuri, March 2008.

[edit] Future events

Pheo-Con is a planned, sponsored event/meet-up that runs concurrent with several Texas Anime Conventions including AnimeFest, Atsuicon, Ikkicon, and Oni-Con.

  • Legal Disclaimer: Pheocon is a fan-run program. Although it is run concurrent with Anime themed conventions, it is not sponsored by those conventions. Sponsorship is provided by the Lazarus Entertainment Group's AtsuiCon.
