Jacques Hnizdovsky

Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915-1985) was a Ukrainian-American painter, printmaker and sculptor. Hnizdovsky was born in Ukraine in 1915. He studied oil painting in Warsaw and Zagreb, but worked primarily in woodcuts after his move to the United States in 1949. He is said to have been inspired by traditional Japanese woodcuts as well as the German etcher Albrecht Dürer.
Hnizdovsky's woodcuts frequently depict plants and animals, most often isometric projections of individuals and occasionally in pairs or in larger groups. Sheep, cats, and trees are common subjects. He also a number of series of woodcuts for books of poetry, most notably several sets for volumes by William Jay Smith.
