Jacob Sugden was a fictional character in the popular soap opera Emmerdale.
He never appeared on the Soap as the start of the first episode was his funeral.
The official cause of death was given as liver failure. Jacob had been work shy and drunk away most of the farms profits leaving it in a sorry state. It was badly maintained and run down while he was alive, the future of the farm looked bleaked. Jacob left his wife Annie and three grown children: two sons, Jack and Joe, and a daughter Peggy.
Jacob's name was later passed on as a middle name for his grandsons Jackie Merrick and Robert Sugden.
Although Jacob Sugden's death is here stated as 10 October 1972, his gravestone as shown in episode 25 of Emmerdale Farm gives his date of death as 03 July 1972.
