Jacob Avshalomov

Jacob Avshalomov (* March 28, 1919 in Tsingtao, China) is a composer and conductor. He was born as the son of composer Aaron Avshalomov in China, where he also received his general education. In 1937 he relocated to the USA, where he continued his education under Ernst Toch, Bernard Rogers and Aaron Copland, as well as at Reed College and the Eastman School of Music. He became a citizen of the United States in 1944.
Avshalomov has taught at Columbia University (1946-54), University of Illinois and Aspen School of Music, among others, and was conductor of the Portland Youth Philharmonic from 1954-1994.
