[edit] Athletics
Jackson High School is a founding member school of the Federal League, including the schools of Perry High, Boardman High, Lake High, McKinley High, North Canton Hoover High School, GlenOak High School, and Austintown Fitch High. Jackson Sports have never won a team OHSAA title, but in recent history the Polar Bear's basketball team has been to the final four. The Girls Cross Country Team finished second in the state only to Bowling Green High School in an intense race during the 2005 school year at Scioto Downs. The boy's golf team also qualified for the state tournament in 2007, finishing 9th. The Men's cross country team also performs well at local, regional, and state levels. Women's sports at Jackson are strong programs, particularly, women's tennis, women's soccer (as well as the men's soccer), the women's track team and cross country team, and the swim team. All of which have had unprecedented streaks as Federal League champions, some streaks spanning a decade or more. Perhaps the most powerful of Jackson's football teams came before the state playoff system. Following the victorious 1962 season, the 1963 and 1964 teams struggled against stronger competition. However, many younger players obtained valuable playing experience against this much stronger competition. Towards the end of the 1964 season the Bears caught fire and won the majority of their remaining 4 games which set up a showdown against North Canton Hoover. Jackson defeated Hoover 14-13 thus setting the stage for the 1965-1966 championship run.
On November 6th 2007, there was a report by a Massillon Jackson administrator about the use of ineligible players by an opponent after suffering a heart wrenching loss in the boys state soccer tournament. It is speculated by Cleveland area news outlets that the timing of the protest was intended to provoke a rushed decision. Because of this administrator, the Massillon Jackson soccer team advanced to the next level of the tournament. Massillon Jackson won their next game in the state semi-finals and advance to the state championship game where they lost 2-1 to Hilliard Davidson.
[edit] Music department
The band produces a show yearly and is considered one of the best bands in the state of Ohio.[citation needed] The band has marched in the Rose Bowl parade, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, and Disney parades. The band has also traveled to Hawaii , Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, and Phoenix, Arizona. The choral department has six choirs regularly obtain superior ratings from the Ohio Music Educators Association.[citation needed] Jackson High School's show choir, the Jacks-N-Jills, performs throughout the region. The Choral Department also mounts the school's annual musical production, which in the 2007-2008 school year was Thoroughly Modern Millie. The choir also travels a semi-annual NYC/PA Tour. This tour consists of sophomore, junior, and senior members of the elite choirs performing in New York City and Pennsylvania
[edit] Other distinctions
In 2006 JHS was rated as academically excellent by the Ohio Department of Education. With JHS scoring 110 and meeting 12 of 12 academic achievement indicators. The Jackson Local district scored 106.9, making it the highest scoring district in Stark and several surrounding counties. In 2005 Jackson High School was also named to Newsweek's list of the top 1,000 schools in America. This was the first time that JHS made the list since being founded.
In the spring of 2005 the high school began a multi-year $50,000,000 addition and total renovation not slated to be complete until the 2007-2008 school year. The school construction is said to be on-time yet rumor has it that the school has postponed the Gym construction, and focused resources on the main addition.
In August of 2006 the residents of Jackson Township passed a renewal of an existing levy, but did not pass an additional emergency operation levy. According to school board statements, the additional levy monies are needed to make up for the loss of business tax revenues and to support a larger student population. However many residents feel that the school does not practice efficient fiscal management, and expects the community to make up for poor allocation and accounting. As of recently the school district has become embroiled in a heated quarrel with The Repository, a locally-circulated newspaper. The Superintendent of the District places partial blame on the newspaper for the failing of its proposed additional levy. Since 2004, the newspaper has intensified its criticisms of the school system; the degree of legitimacy in these condemnations is an ongoing debate. An additional request for funds was denied by voters in November 2006 and once again in May 2007.
The Mock Trial Acting Team at Jackson, advised by Mr. Chris Amedeo, has made itself a presence in the Mock Trial community over the past several years. During the 2005-2006 school year, they finished 10th in the state for the first time in the history of the program. Just during this past school year (2006-2007) they managed to send two teams to states, and succeeded in finishing 4th and 7th respectively.
Jackson also boasts a very strong Speech and Debate Program, which is rated 46th in the nation. Their Speech and debate team is also ranked 7th in the state of Ohio. In the 2006-2007 season, the Jackson Speech and Debate team took 33 state Qualifiers and had 5 placers; Eric Atkinson in OO, Serra and Shaheen in Policy, and Patel and Whisler in PF. This is more qualifiers than any other School in the state of Ohio. At the end of the 2006-2007 season, the JHS Speech and Debate team was ranked number one in the Eastern Ohio District.
