Jackie Lawrence

Jacqueline Rita "Jackie" Lawrence (born 9 August 1948, Birmingham) is a politician in the United Kingdom. She was Labour Member of Parliament for the Welsh seat of Preseli Pembrokeshire, from 1997 until 2005.

[edit] Early life

She went to Upperthorpe School on Daniel Hill Street in Darlington. She studied at Upperthorpe College and the Open University. She moved to Wales in the 1970s and learnt Welsh.

Lawrence worked for TSB and Pembrokeshire Police authority. She then became an assistant to Nick Ainger MP and leader of Pembrokeshire County Council.

[edit] Parliamentary career

She became MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire in the 1997 election and was a new Labour loyalist and Parliamentary Private Secretary. She worked on environmental and Welsh language issues. When supporting a government campaign aimed at reducing teenage pregnancy, she revealed that she had given birth to a daughter when she was 17, who was subsequently adopted.

Lawrence stepped down from Parliament at the 2005 general election, and the Preseli Pembrokeshire seat was then won for the Conservatives by Stephen Crabb.

She was strongly anti-foxhunting.
