Jack Rickard (1932-1983) was an illustrator who worked in many media, including a lengthy stint at MAD Magazine and numerous advertising campaigns.
Clarke won an art scholarship to the Rochester Institute of Technology. He subsequently worked at Charlton Comics, and as an assistant on the "Li'l Abner" comic strip. He soon became a mainstay in the advertising field, where his work was noticed by MAD. He started illustrating for the magazine in 1961. Most notably, Rickard became the main replacement as illustrator for the covers for Mad after the death of Norman Mingo in 1980, until his own death three years later.
"I think of all the artists we've had," said MAD editor Nick Meglin, "we miss Jack the most. Jack had so many styles, such a total command of all techniques. He was especially useful when we wanted something to have a real rounded, 3-D look to it."
Rickard's style was in demand for movie promotions. Clarke did the poster art for two Sidney Poitier movies Uptown Saturday Night and Let's Do It Again, and for the 1974 Peter Sellers movie Soft Beds, Hard Battles (also known as Party for Hitler and Undercovers Hero). He drew both the original movie poster for Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, and its parody on the cover of MAD #137.
