J Harlen Bretz in 1949, photo taken by Dr. Julian Goldsmith. Photo retrieved from here.

Dr. Goldsmith later wrote in 1995:

Imagine my amazement upon finding J Harlen (Doc) Bretz staring at me just as he had in 1949 when I took the picture. He is loading a pipe from a blue can of Edgeworth, his favorite tobacco, that was resting on the fender of my Concord blue Studebaker. In the background, out of focus, is Mount Rushmore. He and I were traveling through the Black Hills on the way to a fieldcamp in Wyoming run jointly by the University of Montana and the University of Chicago.

He was very proud of the tin hat he was wearing that day, which was given to him during the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam. It was the only hat I ever saw him wear, and it now rests prominently in my office.
