Talk:J. J. Giltinan Shield
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There seems to be a BIG boo boo here.
The JJ Giltinan shield was given to the premiers ALONG with the premiership trophy/cup until the NRL days, when it was decided to award it to the minor premiers.
This change happenned around 98/99/2000. I will look for details. For proof, there are some good photos from the following years of non minor-premiership winning premiers carrying the shield on their lap of honour:
1977, 1981, 1988
I am sure there are others as well
Here is a link to a photo of St George in 1977 http://www.showroom.com.au/dragons/dragonshistory/1977_jjgiltinan_edgegoodwin.jpg note it is NOT 1979, as Goodwin had left the club by then.
- That's correct, and as late as 1995. I'm looking Canterbury's GF photos with the Shield, and they were crappiest Premiers in history, finshing 6th. I can;t see the 97 Knights with it, or the 99 Storm (though that doesn't mean it wsn't there) --I like pants 14:36, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
The last team to be awarded the 'JJ Giltinan shield' and the Cup for that year was Manly in 1996, from 1997 the shield was awarded to the Minor Premiers only. CEP78 05:36, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
[edit] So what's the verdict ?
Article says from 1982 to 1995 it was Winfield Cup + JJ Giltinan given to the Premiers. CEP78 above says it was till 1996. Which one ? CEP78 are you still around ? Banned ? Sticks66 15:47, 19 May 2007 (UTC)
It was definitely awarded to Manly in 96 with the Optus Cup. {it's in the premiership photo}CEP78 04:02, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
Well, they would've got it for being Minor Premier anyway, I suppose they could've brought it along to the GF.
[edit] Wills Cup along with the JJ Giltinan Shield
I'm extremely dubious about the article's assertion that the Wills Cup used to given to the Premiers along with the JJG. I went to many Grand Finals in the 70s and I don't recall the victors doing the lap of honour with anything other than the Shield. Further it is undisputed that WD & HO Wills sponsored a full scale pre-season competition from 1962 to 1981. It doesn't fit that a Wills Cup would have been given by them to the Pre-Season competition winners (which it definitely was) and also to the NSWRL premiers. Can anyone confirm ? -Sticks66 00:55, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
- This is probably the source (http://users.hunterlink.net.au/~maajjs/aus/nsw/syd/sydcomps.htm#First%20Grade). I can't find any other non-internet references, although I see the 75 Roosters hauling a cheque around from Wills ($9,000 lol). It's possible, like the cheque, it was only a minor appendage with the Shield being the real deal.
