[edit] J.W. Nixon Mustang Band
The J.W. Nixon Mustang band started in 1964, when the doors of the high school first opened. However, in 1984, under the direction of their newly appointed head band director, Mr. Carlos Luna, the Nixon Band earned its first "Superior"(one)rating in the UIL Marching Contest, held yearly in Robstown, TX. Later that year, the J.W. Nixon Honors Winds Band earned a "Superior" rating in the concert and sight reading portions of the UIL competition. This first Sweepstakes led to 22 more Sweepstakes and this tradition is still going strong today. The Nixon Band is well beloved by Laredo and is always supported by the city as well. An LISD Board Member and former Nixon High School principal, Mrs. Viola M. Moore was a staunch supporter for years. In her honor and recognition, the band hall was renamed the Viola M. Moore Band Hall. The band has also historically excelled in marching competition. Placing second in State in 1982 and winning it all in 1983, the band returned all to the State Marching Contest in 1998. Today, the Nixon Band is one of the best bands in Laredo. The students are dedicated and disciplined and the staff, though strict most of the time is always there for them. Currently, Mr. Luna is still head director, as well as LISD Coordinator of Bands, and the Region XIV TMEA President. There have been countless of associate directors, but the ones that are there as of now are Mr. Hector A. Navarro, Mr. Fidel Borrego III, and Mr. Miguel Cabrera.

[edit] Traditions
Every football season Laredo gets ready for the awaited Nixon vs. Martin Football game that is held the last weekend of football season at Shirley Field. The game used to be held during the night on Fridays. Due to an auto accident in November 1994, involving the death of one of the Martin underclassmen football players while on a pep parade near the Nixon school grounds, the game was canceled that year. From the next season forward, it was decided to reschedule the game to Saturday afternoons to alleviate the all-day buildup to the game.
