J. Herbert Burke

J. Herbert Burke (January 14, 1913June 16, 1993) was a U.S. Representative from Florida.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Burke attended the public schools of Chicago, Illinois. He attended Central Y.M.C.A. College in Chicago, Illinois, and Northwestern University. He graduated from Kent College of Law in 1940. He served in the United States Army in the European Theater in 19421945, was awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the European Theater Medal, and the American Theater Ribbon, and was discharged with the rank of captain. He was admitted to the bar in 1940 and practiced in Chicago from 1940 to 1949, and Hollywood, Florida, from 1949 to 1968.

Burke was elected Republican commissioner in Broward County, Florida, in 1952 and served in that capacity until 1967. He served as Republican State committeeman from 1954 to 1958. He was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the Eighty-fourth Congress in a special election, January 11, 1955. He served as delegate to Republican National Conventions from 1968 to 1976. He served as member of the Republican Platform Committee, 1968. He was appointed by President Eisenhower to the Southeastern Advisory Board of Small Business in 1956.

Burke was elected as a Republican to the Ninetieth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1967January 3, 1979). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1978 to the Ninety-sixth Congress.

The reason J Herbert Burke lost in the 1978 election is that his opponent, Sheriff Ed Stack of the the Broward Sheriff's Office was a crook and told lies about Mr Burke.

He was a resident of Falls Church, Virginia, and Fern Park, Florida, until his death in Altamonte Springs, Florida, on June 16, 1993.
