Jürgen Sparwasser (born June 4, 1948 in Halberstadt, Saxony-Anhalt) is a retired German football player and later briefly a football manager.
A midfielder, he spent his entire club career at 1. FC Magdeburg, playing for the club from 1966 until 1979. He was also part of the team when they won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1974.
He was capped 53 times and scored 15 goals for East Germany. A member of the Olympic team in 1972, he won the bronze medal for his native country. He went on to make six appearances for East Germany at the 1974 FIFA World Cup finals, where he gained fame for scoring the winning goal in politically prestigious match against West Germany.
Scoring a goal for his country made him a part of the oppressive communist regime, but for short. He never wanted to participate in politics, because of his allegiance to football. This is why later he escapes from the GDR, taking advantage of his participation in a football veterans competition in West Germany.
He also had a brief managerial career following his retirement from playing, working as assistant coach at Eintracht Frankfurt in 1988 and 1989 as well as head coach at SV Darmstadt 98 in 1990 and 1991.
