Izumi Kanai
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Izumi Kanai (金井泉 Kanai Izumi?) is a character in the novel Battle Royale, and the film and manga of the same name. In the film she was played by Tamaki Mihara. Ai Iwamura "stands-in" for Mihara as Izumi in one of the scenes [1].
Izumi has a blood type of B.
[edit] Pre-Program
Izumi Kanai is one of the class of third-year students at the fictional Shiroiwa Junior High School in the fictional town of Shiroiwa, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. She was the daughter of a town official, and grew up as part of a very wealthy family, though she remained very down-to-earth and friendly. She was once selected to run in a relay race at school, but she dropped the baton and burst into tears. In the novel, Yutaka Seto has a crush on her, but she does not know this. She is a part of Yukie Utsumi's group and is friends with Mayumi Tendo in the novel and the manga.
[edit] During The Program
In the novel, Izumi has her throat slit by Kazuo Kiriyama at the southern tip of the island along with several other students. Izumi is not a member of the "Kiriyama Family," and the book does not provide a reason for why she moves to that location - she happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the original Japanese manga, the same scenario occurs, except Kiriyama shoots Izumi.
In the English-language manga version of the story, she is taken hostage by Hiroshi Kuronaga and Ryuhei Sasagawa, who are planning to rape her and allow for Kiriyama to rape her. Kiriyama decides that, if a coin reveals heads, he would rape Izumi with the others and then oppose Yonemi Kamon. Since Kiriyama's coin yielded a tails, Kiriyama shoots Izumi in the head and then shoots the other gang members.
In the movie version, Izumi is shown as one of the gang members, although in the film Kiriyama is not the leader of the gang. In the film she, along with Mitsuru Numai, Hiroshi Kuronaga, Ryuhei Sasagawa, and Sho Tsukioka, confronts Kiriyama and accuses him of being a spy for Kitano. All of the members are killed by Kiriyama. Izumi survives the initial batch of gunfire aimed at the gang members and pleads for her life; a second round of bullets kills her.
