Izafat

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Izafat (also Izafah) (Persian: اضافه) is a current-Persian language grammatical construct which links two words together. The function of the connecting vocal -e approximately corresponds to that of the English preposition of. It is also used extensively in Urdu mainly in poetic settings.

Examples: aab-e-chasm': tears (verb. Water-of-eyes).

The term is inherited from Arabic Idafa which means a genitive construction. It is also traditionally used in Turkic languages where it applies to a typologically quite different structure.
