Iyoas II of Ethiopia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Iyoas II or Joas II (Ge'ez ኢዮዋስ, died 3 June 1821) was nəgusä nägäst (14 June 1818[1] - 3 June 1821) of Ethiopia, and a member of the Solomonic dynasty. He was the son of Hezqeyas.

Iyoas was selected Emperor over his nephews Zerobabel and Merrit, according to Nathaniel Pearce, by Ras Gugsa and Kenyazmach Akli Meru due to the nephews' bad characters. Prior to his elevation, he had been living as a monk in Waldebba.[2]

According to Samuel Gobat, Iyoas was "efficiently sustained by Ras Googsa, who was his firm support, or rather his superior."[3] With his death an interregnum of several months followed.
