[edit] History
According to local tradition, the town received its name when the old Town of Union was split into two new towns in 1846. While the first new town was named Concord, residents were undecided about the name of the second. They threw slips of papers with letters of the alphabet into a hat and had a girl by the name of Mary Piper pick them until a word was made that could be used as the town name.[3]
