Welcome to Wikipedia. We invite everyone to contribute constructively to our encyclopedia. Take a look at the welcome page if you would like to learn more about contributing. [edit] Ohio State Alumni Page & Harvey Freidman
Thanks for your recent revisions of our regular vandal.
Regarding Harvey Freidman, I have two questions. First, his degree is from MIT, so unless he did his undergrad at Ohio State I don't think he should go on one of the alumni lists. Second, if we put him in the current notable faculty section, there I've used National Academy membership as the basis for inclusion for the sciences. I think that any full professor at an AAU university should have a high level of distinction, but I'm unfamiliar with his work and don't have a good basis to judge whether he's reached a level of distinction that places him above most faculty members. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sam Harmon (talk • contribs)
- Hmm, those are good points. I've moved Harvey Friedman out of the "alumni" section for now. --Ixfd64 20:08, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Notable YouTube Users
Before I revert your changes I would like to understand your reasoning behind changing from "Users" to "users".
If we look at the Gregg Reference Manual Ninth Edition page 106 (Sorry I don't have the newest one) we will see that in reguards to ...titles of literary and artist works, and in displayed headings, capitalize all words with four or more letters. Also, capitalize words with fewer than four letters except except: the, a, an, as, but, if, or, nor, at, by, for, in, of, off, on, out, to, up. Hence "Notable YouTube Users" instead of "Notable YouTube users" --Bschott 03:21, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
- I understand your point, but the Wikipedia Manual of Style is what we're supposed to use here. --Ixfd64 03:35, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gregmitch (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · block user · block log)
Is requesting unblock - he does appear to have made some legit contribs, thoughts? - GIen 22:46, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
- In case you didn't know, some Stephen Colbert-inspired vandals have been adding false claims that the number of elephants has tripled during the last six months. It seems acceptible for administrators to block such vandals. However, if you don't think that Gregmitch (talk · contribs) is really a vandal, then feel free to unblock him. --Ixfd64 00:37, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] AOL blocks
Thanks for fixing the Jimbo/Cyde {{username}} blocks - what are the parameters that I would be best to use in future? - GIen 22:22, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
- You can check the "Block anonymous users only" box when applying blocks. That way, logged-in users won't be affected by the collateral damage. --Ixfd64 22:24, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Syew Edyc
Actually, from what we can tell, this may have been a genuine, albeit misguided, editor, who meant it as a compliment. Odd. DS 00:17, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- In case you weren't aware, several bad-faith users have been trying to cause trouble for Cyde during the last couple of days. For example, Clyde Wey (talk · contribs) was created in bad faith by Syphonbyte (talk · contribs), who had been edit-warring with Cyde recently. Also, earlier today, an AOL vandal was creating offensively-named accounts (example) just to attack Cyde. However, I've assumed good faith and reinstated the edits made by Syew Edyc (talk · contribs) for now. --Ixfd64 00:34, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Also, in large online communities, some users will deliberately choose names that resemble those of their idols (or role models) without having any intention to impersonate them. I think that this might have been the case for Syew Edyc. --Ixfd64 01:30, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Username blocks
When I block an account for a bad username, I make a judgement. If the bad username could be a good faith contribution, I allow the creation of a new account from that IP. If it is obviously trollish or abusive, I do not. The 24 hour autoblocker will allow the IP to try again the next day. Please do not undo my blocks without discussion of the case. Admins shouldn't reverse other admins judgments without discussion. Thanks. --Doc 16:47, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
- Note that I am only unblocking IPs, and not the actual usernames. Also, autoblocks are triggered whether or not the "Prevent account creation" box is checked. --Ixfd64 17:05, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
-
- I note that, but please don't. By unblocking the IP, you allow the creation of a new username (hence your summary). When I blocked the username I intentially chose to prevent the creation of a new account. If you think I'm wrong in any particular instance, my talk page will be open to you - but please don't undo my intention without discussion.--Doc 17:21, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
-
-
- Following this RfC, I've stopped reverting other administrators' blocks without discussion, except for autoblocked IPs. So far, no other users have objected to my unblocking of autoblocked IPs. However, per your request, I will specifically avoid reverting any of your blocks. --Ixfd64 17:41, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
-
-
-
-
- Thanks. But seriously, I do make mistakes so feel free to pick me up on them on my talk page. And if I've username blocked any account which could reasonably be held to be a good-faith creation, I have no problem with you unblocking the IP - but in the case I was objecting to the username was certainly offensive and abusive --Doc 17:45, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Attack?
Hi, you just recently blocked a user that I warned. Does this [1] earn them an extension or just a warning for personal attack or just let it go? Thanks. --After Midnight 0001 02:09, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
- I don't think that extending the block is really necessary right now, but I'll give 203.97.214.211 (talk · contribs) another warning. --Ixfd64 02:13, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

- OK, but just to clarify, I am not encouraging you to warn, just trying to understand what is appropriate. Now that I am using VP, I'm trying to make sure that I properly understand the rules for all the warnings and templates. --After Midnight 0001 02:16, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism
Hi, I'm not quite sure of the procedure for reporting vandals; I've tried some of the message boards, and found them to be much slower than just going to an admin. In regard to the article Islam, the user RaiIer_505 tried to put the page up for deletion, and was warned. After the page was reverted, user Stephen Bowers did the same thing, but has not been warned. I don't have enough evidence of him as a sockpuppet, but I also notice that all of Stephen Bowers's contributions are crap (including one "revert" that was actually a vandalism). If I've not followed the right procedures, please correct me, but I believe this is the best I can do. --Patstuart 01:15, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
