[edit] Early life

Was born in Willesden, north London, son of a laundry manager. Eucated at Willesden high school, leaving at 15, and became a legal assistant at Wembley Council, while taking a part-time degree in economics and law at Birkbeck College, University of London. Was in the Royal Air Force 1942–46, but never saw action. Postgraduate study at Pembroke College, Oxford then left for Nigeria in 1950 where he worked for ten years in the civil service. On return, was called to the bar at Inner Temple in 1960 and practised criminal law/ Also was a night lawyer for the Daily Express.

In the Parliamentary elections of 1966 contested, unsuccessfully, as a Conservative candidate for the safe Labour seat of East Ham. Subsequently in the 1970 elections, successfully won back the seat of Orpington with a majority of 1,332 that had been lost to the Liberals in 1962. As the member for Orpington he introduced a private members bill called the Bromley London Borough (Crystal Palace) Bill, and became active in the Conservative Party's youth and student wings .
Largely a right-wing reactionary, opposing unions, immigration and sex education, but also apartheid and racism. Supported Europe and became disillusioned with Margaret Thatcher's leadership, voting for Michael Heseltine in the vote that brought her down. He stepped down in 1992.

Married to Joan (née Clement) [1] and had two sons: Clive St George Clement Stanbrook (lawyer) and Cedric John Lionel Clement Stanbrook (writer). Granddaughter Sophie Stanbrook, also a lawyer, ran for Conservative nomination in Ipswich, Suffolk 2007.

After stepping down from Parliament ,studied for a PhD at the University of East Anglia.
