Ergić was born in a coastal town of Šibenik, Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia but started his football career in Australia with Perth Glory. He has dual Australian-Serbian citizenship and trained at the Australian Institute of Sport on a government-funded football scholarship.

In 2000 Ergić moved to Juventus, but went on loan to FC Basel during the season, which later signed him for CHF1.6 million. In June 2004 Ergić was treated for depression in the psychiatric university clinic in Basel, and his further career as a football player was in question at the time. Nevertheless, FC Basel kept him as a player and since 2005 he has been on the pitch again with very good results. He is now the captain of the club.

[edit] International career

He did not choose to play international football for Australia, and instead chose Serbia. On May 15, 2006 Ergić was named as a member of the national team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
