SimiGon is a provider of PC-based training solutions for the defense and aerospace arena, with systems deployed in armed forces worldwide, such as the Belgian Air Force[1] and Lockheed Martin,[2], in addition to entertainment avenues, such as Rocket Racing League.
[edit] History
SimiGon was founded in Herzliya, Israel by flight instructors who identified a gap between professional requirements and existing training methods. SimiGon began marketing its product AirBook in 1998 to air forces around the world[3]. Once the company went public in December of 2006 on the London Stock Exchange, it began to branch out and market the software application on which the AirBook was created. This was called SIMbox. SIMbox is only a software platform, and therefore companies can use its open source architecture and rebrand it, as Lockheed Martin's NxTrain program has done.
According to [Amos] Vizer, [a former fighter pilot and instructor for the Israel Air Force], a young pilot typically learns most of the material through lectures and books. Considering the results of the above-mentioned experiment, Vizer claims his system greatly streamlines the learning process. Instead of learning about the airplane’s switch from a picture in a book, in SimiGon’s system the cadet operates the switches “inside the cockpit,” with virtual reality goggles. “Knowledge is the critical resource in the new economy,” Vizer says, and adds, “The learning method is therefore of great importance. Decentralized simulation is the best way to operate, and is the key to the new technology.” [4]
SIMbox has also been used to create AirTrack, a commercial use of the core simulation technology. AirTrack is an in-flight entertainment system designed to allow passengers a view of the aircraft's position in the air, what other passengers can see out of other windows, etc.
