Ithaca City School District

The Ithaca City School District (ICSD) is a public school district centered in Ithaca, New York, consisting of 12 schools and with a total enrollment of approximately 5,500 students. The ICSD covers 155 square miles of Tompkins County, New York, including the city and town of Ithaca, and parts of several surrounding towns, including: Caroline, Danby, Dryden and Enfield. Approximately 500 teachers work in the district, along with 100 other professional staff members and 200 paraprofessionals.

The district's central offices are located on the Ithaca High School campus at 400 Lake Street in Ithaca. The 2007-2008 budget is $91,055,924.00, with approximately 69% coming from property taxes.

Dr. Judith C. Pastel has been Superintendent of Schools since 1996. (Her tenure is one of the longest of any current superintendent of a public school district in New York.) Under her are Interim Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction- Patrick Jensen, Assistant Superintendent for Business Services- Paul D. Mintz, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources- Melina A. Carnicelli, and Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Lesli Myers.

Tom Frank is the President of the Board of Education; Deborah O'Connor and Jay True are First and Second Vice-Presidents, respectively. There are nine members of the Board of Education elected at-large for three-year terms. Current members (with term expiration dates in parentheses) are:

The following elementary schools were closed in a consolidation effort around 1980:

  • Danby Elementary School (Building now used for some district offices. After the school closed, the building was sold by the district, and then subsequently repurchased a decade later at ten times the original selling price.)
  • East Hill Elementary School
  • Glenwood Elementary School
  • Henry St. John Elementary School
  • West Hill Elementary School (Building now houses the Lehman Alternative Community School.)

Cayuga Heights Elementary School was also closed for several years but was later reopened.
