Italian passports are issued to Italian citizens to travel outside of Italy. For travelling within the European Union, Italian citizens can use their ID card.

Biometric passports are available since October 26, 2006. They are valid for a period of 10 years and they cost €44.66 (32 pages) or €45.62 (48 pages), and one "tax mark" that costs € 40.29.

[edit] Physical Appearance

Italian passports are burgundy coloured, with the Italian Coat of arms emblazoned in the center of the front cover. The word "Passaporto" meaning, passport is inscribed below the coat of arms and "Unione Europea" (English: European Union), "Repubblica Italiana" (English: Italian Republic) above. However, the “e-passport” cover will have the biometric symbol at the bottom, as in other countries. Italian passport use the standard EU design.

According to a study done by Henley & Partners, Italy has a Henley Visa Restrictions Index of 128, which means that Italian citizens enjoy visa-free access to 128 countries and territories for short-term tourism visits. Italy is ranked 3rd in the study in terms of international travel freedom, sharing the same place with the United Kingdom, France and Japan. [1]

It is estimated that 189 countries and territories granted visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to Italian Citizen passport holders of which 153 countries and territories are visa free accessible. Where visa-free access is permitted, such access is not necessarily a right, and admission may technically be at the discretion of border enforcement officers. Visitors engaging in activities other than tourism, including unpaid work, may require a visa or work permit.
