Italian electronic identity card

The Italian electronic identity card, Carta d'identità elettronica (often identified with the abbreviation CIE), is the identification document that has replaced the ID card in Italy. Effective from January 1st 2006, the prior paper-based ID card was replaced. At the request of the first issue or renewal of the document, the electronic identity card will be issued.
