[edit] Summary
This is a detail of the back of what Justeson/Kaufman call the "O'Boyle mask'. It was sent out by Brigham Young University as part of a press release.
The excerpt is used to illustrate here the size, shape, and general context of these "Isthmian script" (Coe) or "Epi-Olmec" (Justeson/Kaufman & others) glyphs.
Inclusion here qualifies for Fair Use under US Copyright law because:
- It is only a small portion of the original photo (<20%).
- It is used for a non-commercial and educational purpose.
- It is representative of the work, showing both a selection of glyphs as well as the edge of the mask.
- It should not affect the commercial viability of the copyright, if it is indeed copyrighted.
The original photo, of which this is an excerpt, is available for download as part of the afore-mentioned Brigham Young University press release.
