Ugh. I'm going to vent.

1) The Alabama state archives say he was a Democrat; the Congressional archives say he was a "Jacksonian," but that he was elected as a Republican. Is all this just triplespeak for Democratic-Republican?

2) They even differ on why he went into congress! The Alabama archives say: "Pickens was appointed to the US Senate to fill a vacancy created by the resignation of Dr. Henry Crawford. Pickens served a short time and retired to Cuba due to ill health where he died on April 24, 1827."

Whereas the Congressional archives say: "appointed to the United States Senate from Alabama to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Henry Chambers and served from February 17, 1826, to November 27, 1826, when a successor was elected; was not a candidate for election to the vacancy; declined an appointment as judge of the United States Court for the District of Alabama in 1826; died near Matanzas, Cuba, on April 24, 1827"

Which is it? :( BTW, tip: Alabama archives at [1], Congressional page is [2]. --Golbez 02:11, Jul 20, 2004 (UTC)
