There's really a lot more to say on IDF insignia

[edit] Navy

Does the Israeli navy really wear a black beret? I come into very little contact (actually none) with navy guys, but I'm pretty sure they wear dark blue. Women wear black AFAIK though. Can anyone verify this? If not, I will eventually revert the edit by IP user. -- Y Ynhockey || Talk Y 02:49, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

Israeli navy wear a dark blue beret. Israeli navy officers wear a visor hat. The article is not complete at all. --84.229.8.44 14:30, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Is it even possible to get a half-decent list of shoulder tags? There is a very small list in the official IDF site: [1] This list is a nice start, but there are dozens of other tags, and they must be listed somewhere.

Are we allowed to use the shoulder-tag images from the IDF site? Do they count as public domain by default?

[edit] Shoulder Tags

Is it even possible to get a half-decent list of shoulder tags? There is a very small list in the official IDF site: [2] This list is a nice start, but there are dozens of other tags, and they must be listed somewhere.

--Ramsobol 20:35, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

The images are fair use because of the Freedom of Information act, although we may need to link to it, or to an explanation of it. As for shoulder tags, I think we can have a sub-heading for the corps (e.g. Military Police Corps) and have a bunch of in-line images with each soulder tag for each specific unit. We probably won't be able to list every single shoulder tag without significant input from users from the entire IDF, but some lists have been in development for years, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 20:44, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
You have to be carful about the tags since some of them are classified, but I think we can use some of them, at least the images from IDF site. To Ynhockey: an images gallery like the American Civil War Corps Badges will be more practical. --Aa2 09:38, 11 April 2006 (UTC)
Yes, that's more or less what I had in mind, but many shoulder tags would need to be photoshopped to fit the required image attributes. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 10:28, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Officer dress

I believe officers once wore grey clothes (seen some pics), but now officers in keva wear light blue clothes, somewhat bordering on grey on occasion. Here are a few recent pictures: Maj. Gen. Amos Yidlin Brig. Gen. Ronny Benny General Dan Halutz

-- Ynhockey (Talk) 10:00, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Actually, Amos Yidlin and Dan Halutz were air-force officers, so they still have air force uniforms even they aren't in the air force now. Ronny Benny has normal ground uniform. It is hard to see it in the small picture but it's kind of green-grey-khaki color (as in the table). --Aa2 12:54, 26 April 2006 (UTC)
See also the picture Dan Halutz in air force uniform with some officers in normal uniform and a similar table from the hebrew wikipedia --Aa2 13:15, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Shoulder tags

While the images from the IDF official site is a start, I strongly oppose using it in the final version of this page. I also can't understand why you deleted the MP tags. Reasons:

  • These tags represent only a very small part of the IDF
  • These tags offer no insight that a bunch of other IDF-related websites don't offer. In fact, a poster with these tags exists on every base - Wikipedia readers deserve more than the standard IDF poster line.
  • The captions are misleading, for example, the tag which says 'Military Police' is actually used only by a very small part of the military police - the Yamlat and headquarters (mifkada).
  • There are spelling errors - one of the captions is ordinance corps. They meant ordnance corps, I assume.

Finally, if you're going to add these images, at least bring back the MP images too, as a start for an expansion. Sometime later I'll work on getting more tag images.

-- Ynhockey (Talk) 11:45, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Do you know which tags (except for the tags in the IDF site) aren't classified? --Aa2 13:01, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
No, but in all likelyhood, whoever adds a certain tag will know if that particular one is classified. I don't know where to get images of any classified tags off-hand (and don't have any that can be scanned), so it shouldn't be a major problem. -- Ynhockey (Talk) 14:08, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
AFAIK, If it can be worn, it's not classified. Sayeret Matkal supposedly don't wear shoulder unit insignia for this reason.--83.130.90.42 19:17, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Please remove the Mamram badge, it has not been used since March 3d 2003, when Lotem (C4I unit) was founded. All units under its command other than the Dirctorate Command and Bahad 7 (training) have been incorporated into that and wear its insignia.--83.130.90.42 19:17, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
