Israel Dagg was only 18 when he became the first secondary school player to be selected for Hawke’s Bay since Danny Lee. He was named one of Hawke’s Bays five promising players for 2006. Dagg has also played in Hawke's Bay age grade teams representing the province at Under 16 and Under 19 level, and he attended the Sir Brian Lochore rugby camp for Under 17-year-olds in 2005.

Dagg is not just a good rugby player he is also known to be a talented cricketer and was a member of the Central Districts Under-17 cricket side. In 2004, Dagg participated in a "fast-bowling" competition for secondary school students nationwide, run by the National Bank. Dagg won this competition, recording a bowling speed of 143 kilometers per hour.
