[edit] Life and career
Necmi was born in Turkey in 1970 and graduated from the Law Faculty of Istanbul University.[1] From 1988 to 1992, he worked on a number of feature films, TV series, shorts and photo shoots.[1] From 1993 to 2004, he worked as an editor and video graphic designer for ARD German TV Studio in Istanbul.[1] During that time, Necmi developed two major independent projects; 'Transformation' (2001), a solo black and white photography exhibition in Dulcinea Istanbul, and 'The image is YOU!', a black and white interactive photography project launched in 2002.[2][3][4] Between 2006 and 2007, he worked as an instructor in Visual Communication Design and Photography and Video at Istanbul Bilgi University.[5] In 2005, he started his own production company, IN Works Istanbul. In February 2008, he finished his début real-life feature film, Should I Really Do It, which he produced and directed.[6]
[edit] Style
Necmi's work explores different aspects of "the real", blurring the margins between art, life and fantasy.[7] In recent projects, Necmi has chosen not to work with actors, but rather real people, drawing his aesthetic inspiration from the ambiguities and complexities of their daily life.[8] The resulting works are edgy and surreal, attempting to bring to the screen the varied fantasies which people weave through their everyday lives; life-becoming-art, art-becoming-life. [9] From his earliest work in black and white photography to his current work in film, Necmi's craft is characterised by its meticulous attention to visual composition.
