"In the Muslim view, it is noteworthy that the name Olympics originates from the greek mythology, deemed to be a pagan religion." Are there some muslim countries that don't participate in the olympics at all? Or are there just some sects or scholars who feel participation is wrong? Or is this not actually noteworthy? [edit] Coherence

This article still needs some coherent form as at the moment it looks more like a real-life noticeboard where different pieces of information have been randomly posted. There are too many minor sections with single sentences and far too many weasel words like Some scholars believe that polo originated.... It should read something like Polo originated in... and back it up with a citation from one those scholars in a proper format using the {{ref|citation}} and {{note|citation}} that was used in the paragraph on the Solidarity Games. Especially you Striver, pull your socks up and move your mind into second-gear - think about your edits carefully so you don't spend more time on countering arguments at deletion nominations. The result of the debate was move. —Nightstallion (?) Seen this already? 06:55, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Requested move

The article should be renamed to Sports in Islam. The reasons are twofold:

  • The article covers sports in general, not just athletics, i.e. track and field.
  • "Islamic athletics" would mean "athletics that is peculiar to Islam". Instead, the article is about the Islamic attitude towards sports.

Other names are also possible, of course. GregorB 14:27, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Support - a change in name could bring better focus as right now it only contains random thoughts Green Giant 23:46, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion

Add any additional comments
  • oppose Thanks for bringing the issue to attention, and also for notifiyng me on the talk page. I oppose it and propose a rename to "Islamic sports", for two reasons: one: so it rhymes with everything else in Islamic studies, and also to denote "Sports bound by Sharia", and not only "Islamic view of sports". Hope it helps, peace! --Striver 14:02, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
It is true that there are also articles like e.g. Islamic science. I still think that Science in Islam would perhaps be a better name, but to keep in line with naming of other articles in Category:Islam, Islamic sports would also be OK, as it addresses one of two issues I raised with the present name. • Comment - When this article was up for AfD, I did suggest it should focus on things like the Islamic Solidarity Games, but the editor's response was to copy my AfD comment into the article. I still stand by that argument, as a lot of the other bits and pieces in the article are more to do with general modesty in dress rather than any specific Islamic athletic aspect.
